WELCOME to the CHOC Talk, the message forums of the CHOC Board (the Christian Homeschool Online Community Board for westside, and general, Portland, OR). These forums act as "classified ads" and message boards for Christian homeschoolers, and businesses and organizations that serve homeschoolers, to connect with each other to share specific details and information, including time-sensitive events, useful to the homeschool community. The forums are also a great place to connect with other like-minded individuals. Please feel free to contribute knowledge of an upcoming event, fun outing, great activity, new class starting, or query others about a homeschool issue or share homeschool ideas. The forum headings show what topics should go where. The sticky topics in each forum tell how to post and what is allowed (please remain respectful of a Christian worldview and always friendly, wholesome, and truthful). This is the interactive side of our CHOC board "directory" where you in the homeschool community can help generate those great ideas that get archived on our website! (To see the CHOC Board website, please click on our logo above). So join in the fun, post, and connect!

Learn Music Conceptually - Piano, Flute, & Oboe - Emily Sauble, Instructor

The Conceptual Method:

Many classically trained musicians are proficient in reading music, but lack one or more of the following - improvisation, transposition, sight-singing, composition, and training the ear to hear music at a deeper-than-surface level.

The concepts of music: rhythm, melody, phrasing, modality/tonality, harmony, articulation, etc. require these skills to be completely effective, yet I find they are hard to teach from a method book. I use tools from the Kodaly and Dalcroze methods, as well as techniques to avoid injury and use the whole body to play music effortlessly. My goal is to help students 'learn how to learn'. The student finds out that music is not reading notes on a page or imitating their teacher, but discovering on their own the joy of learning! This is at the heart of the homeschooling method, and I believe it should not be any different in the music room.

Qualifications:

* I am first and foremost a Christian, and cannot separate my faith from my teaching
* 15 years of music experience
* 6 years of teaching experience
* NFMC, OMTA and MTNA member
* OMTA level 10 achiever
* I have studied music theory, history, keyboard skills, and pedagogy at college level under skilled instructors Harold Grey and Mary Kogen.

$20 - 45-60 minute lesson
$12 - 30 minute lesson (beginners only)

I understand the hardship many are facing in the current economy, and multiple siblings and those with a financial need may also apply for a discount. I teach both at my studio and your home.

Fall term for the 2009-2010 school year begins August 31st.

Please feel free to call me with any questions you may have, I look forward to hearing from you!
