WELCOME to the CHOC Talk, the message forums of the CHOC Board (the Christian Homeschool Online Community Board for westside, and general, Portland, OR). These forums act as "classified ads" and message boards for Christian homeschoolers, and businesses and organizations that serve homeschoolers, to connect with each other to share specific details and information, including time-sensitive events, useful to the homeschool community. The forums are also a great place to connect with other like-minded individuals. Please feel free to contribute knowledge of an upcoming event, fun outing, great activity, new class starting, or query others about a homeschool issue or share homeschool ideas. The forum headings show what topics should go where. The sticky topics in each forum tell how to post and what is allowed (please remain respectful of a Christian worldview and always friendly, wholesome, and truthful). This is the interactive side of our CHOC board "directory" where you in the homeschool community can help generate those great ideas that get archived on our website! (To see the CHOC Board website, please click on our logo above). So join in the fun, post, and connect!

First Freedom Essay Scholarship Contest, registration deadline Nov. 23, essay Nov. 28

In its 17th year, this national essay competition offers 9th - 12th grade students an opportunity to compete for a $3,000, $1,500 and $750 award, as they examine the history and implementation of religious freedom-the freedom of conscience-in American democracy and the world today.

This year we are going global, as the topic asks students to write about international religious freedom.

Students will be introduced to Article 18 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the place of religious liberty in U.S. history and foreign policy.

Their task will challenge their analytic writing skills and require them to assess
current-day events in terms of international human rights and history. (Model UN sponsors may find this topic of particular interest, as well.)

For the topic, guidelines, registration, classroom poster, student flyer and
other details, visit http://www.firstfreedom.org, and then click on the red First Freedom Student Competition button (center column).

Also included on the website is a resource manual and 15-minute online DVD about international religious freedom (green button). The DVD features students and seasoned experts and may be viewed in the classroom or on a home computer. The online DVD and manual are freely accessible on our website, and we hope that you will use them as a resource, whether or not you participate in the competition.

Student online registration is required on or before Monday, November 23, 2009, and the postmark entry deadline for mailing the essay with its accompanying entry materials is Saturday, November 28.

We look forward to your participation in the First Freedom Student Competition!

Sincerely,

Isabelle Kinnard Richman, JD, PhD
