Re: Need your feedback about Runboard forum
Welcome, fellow Michigander!
I researched a lot of remotely-hosted message board systems before choosing Runboard back in 2005, and I would still be here even if I hadn't become a member of staff last year.
In my research, I first read the TOS of various providers, because I had past experience with one that didn't allow non-English to be posted on their boards, and I didn't want to set up a board elsewhere with stupid arbitrary rules, only to find out about them later.
Of the ones that passed that test, I checked out their support boards next, to see how many complaints they got, what types of complaints they were, and how the staff handled complaints and inquiries in general. Most of them had posts that went unanswered for days, non-staff posting abusive replies with no staff around to stop them, etc. Weeding those out, I also weeded out the ones that had a lot of reports about major bugs and/or downtime, etc. This left me with only a few choices, one of which was Runboard.
My final test was to set up a board at each of the providers that passed my other two tests, to see what kind of customizability, security settings, etc. they had, and Runboard was the only one out of that final handful that had what I was looking for.
Just so you can make an informed decision, you will need to determine what you need in terms of features. If you want to be able to upload files to the forum itself, it might be best to install a board on a domain that you own, but of course that means you'll have to handle any upgrades, patches, etc, it might need. However, there are plenty of free file hosts out there that people can use if they want to "attach" files to their posts (via a link, in this case). Or, since you run a business (and presumably have a website), you could allow people to upload files to your website via a script you can find at Hotscripts.com. We also have RSS feeds, which would allow you to display some of your board's information on your website, if you know how to work with RSS.
We back up the whole system every night, and this backup starts at 4:15am or 5:15am Michigan time, depending on daylight savings time. If your business is based locally, then the timing of our daily backups shouldn't be an issue for you, and you can rest easier knowing that an unlikely system-wide crash won't make all your posts and board customizations disappear.
Feel free to set up a test board, see what we have to offer, and ask questions in our Q&A forum if you need help with anything. As Jinzy said, we have a lot of people here who are knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous, and you will never have to wait "days" for a response.
Just so you know, every board gets a few days of free premium (no ads), but you will see a banner ad at the top of the board after that if you don't upgrade. You can find information about our user premium and board premium here.
If you decide not to upgrade, Runboard's owner is against popups, so all you'll ever see is the banner ad.
I hope this helps!

Re: Need your feedback about Runboard forum
Hi,
Of course there are some + and -'s, like in every specific fact in our lifes. And if the subject is a software thing like a forum system, than we have to talk about tec. possibilities for sure.
First of all i can honostly say, RB system have a great support with very kind stuff people here. You can easily find answers to your questions as Lesa said before not waiting days or weeks...Also you can trust RB's security and backup policy. You can use CSS and HTML on your forums. And iframe ofcourse.
Hımm, about negative issues, let me say it's a relative fact of course, RB system doesn't allow java-script on their database. It means you can't use or add some important mods. RB forums doesn't use php or pearl base as i know, its kinda owners own creative thing.
RB board is not a specific board, it's part of a forum community, so your account becomes a global account which you can use same account in every different RB forum. So as a issue of this, you can't change your nickname and if there's a nickname, i mean global, which is taken before you can't get that nickname in your own board also. For example you can't take my nickname: Redsun9 in your RB board.
Saying again RB stuff are really a hardworking team and they are creative. But with some limits you can only change things to one point. There are not too much updates, or completed feature requests in RB system...
Like Lesigner Girl said before just try to build a board and see +'s and limits yourself. And of course ask big boards admins for their ideas this will help you also.

Re: Need your feedback about Runboard forum
Hi Redsun!
quote: RB forums doesn't use php or pearl base as i know, its kinda owners own creative thing.
PHP and Perl are server-side scripting languages, which means you would need access to Runboard's root files in order to use them. Doing so would affect the entire system, not just your board, which is why you'll never be able to use those languages on a remotely-hosted message board.
Runboard may or may not use one or both of those languages, and I won't divulge what languages are used in Runboard's back-end programming for security reasons.
You can, however, use PHP or another server-side language to rotate images like I do for my avatar. The difference is that the PHP script is hosted on my website, with the url to the PHP file being used instead of an image url. Just right-click my avatar and view its properties to see the ".php" at the end of the url. You can also use PHP on your website and display it through an iframe, like we did over at Runboard Extra with the calendar at the top left of the page to make it change months on its own, as well as with the "Skin Show" further down in the sidebar, which displays a random skin with a direct link to its how-to.
It's true that javascript isn't allowed on Runboard. It was at one point, but some nasty things can be done with js, so Thor removed our ability to use it for security reasons. You can still use DOM functions like onClick and onMouseOver, etc; it's the <script> tag itself that is filtered out.
It doesn't bother me that we can't use javascript. In fact, I read the announcement about it being disabled before I started my board. A lot of remotely-hosted systems don't allow it, and there is plenty you can do without js anyway, like the ever-so-popular image "rollovers" on links. But in my professional opinion, CSS does a much better job of that, and that is something we can use to its fullest.
