Web Accelerators

As many of you know, I am as old school as they come (not purposefully mind you), and I have been searching for the last hour or two for a good web browsing accelerator. I found one but it would not recognise my password, so I uninstalled it. I use Firefox 2.0, and am on Dial Up, Windows 98, and have no money, so I am looking for something free.

So can anyone help an old-schooler out? emoticon

Much appreciated, I hate going slow. emoticon

I'll help (or try to at any rate) emoticon

First you need something to really tell you how fast you are going now. I suggest this site it is geared towards the most graphic intensive environment out there (gaming) and does a good job of giving you the results you are really looking for.

When I was on dial-up I used this program to tweak my system so it was as fast as I could get it while browsing.

Are you also wanting to download large files?

Since this isn't a Runboard-specific question, I think we should move this to Main Chat as soon as Jason sees it. emoticon

Rick, I know you can recommend a good download manager in regards to your last question. emoticon

Jason, the only web accelerator I ever used came with the ISP, but it looks like Rick can help you out here. emoticon

Yes I agree with you LG, it really should be in the main chat area. Fortunately Jason visits here often so it shouldn't take to long to get a response.

[please tell me you didn't use "The Rocket" accelerator, it actually slows down your connection speeds when downloading!!!]...

Interesting Rick. I did that speed test but it changed all the time and I don't have a clue what the results meant but this is what I got when I clicked start and did it 3 times.

259.9
451.1
336.9

Is that good. (we have 4 lap tops running right now though.)

Mine fluctuated too.
Measured in Mbps:

8.9
18.7
12.9
12.1
20.6

Erika, was yours in Mbps or Kbps?

Re: Web Accelerators

That's about 1/2 a Mb, and about 20 times as fast as I got when I was on dialup. I only have experience with dialup and cable, so if you have DSL or something, I really don't know if that's good or not. Heck, I don't even know if mine is good for cable, but it's a LOT better than dialup. emoticon

Re: Web Accelerators

My DSL is 1.4 Mbps.
Almost as fast as I can click.
Those cable speeds are really something.
Must've been a shock to go from dial up to that.

Re: Web Accelerators

If you have DSL or Broadband then this link may give you a better idea of your normal speed... My own results look like this for a promised 3mbs dsl connection...

Image

Erika, if the numbers you gave were kbs then you are at a 512k connection (a lot faster than dial-up but only about 2/3rds what you could get with a satellite high-speed connection).

LG, you are at T1 speeds and are getting hit by other users sharing the connection which indicates some sort of cable DSL...
