Re: Pine Bowl Speedway...Then and Now

Great pictures. Obviously, I haven't seen the 2008 shots, nor had I seen the second oldie shot. I thought I could recognize some of the cars, but I can't.

thanks for posting the pics!!!!!!

i was thinking about going there when the snow cleared.... how did you get there without the owner going bonkers on you??????

and would this be a well worth trip if i went there to get a look for myself ?

scott

I didn't go back there personally. I'm not sure what arrangements were made with the owner, but the pics were fowarded to me. I heard that there's really nothing else worth seeing back there. The pics really illustrate it well.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District

Just got back from the Lost Speedway show, and every show keeps getting bigger, and bigger. Some really great history of racing comes unsurfaced at these shows, and increcible photo albums from the 30-40s-50s-60s get dusted off and displayed to the public. Talking with many pioneers of this sport, on Sunday I think I have unearthed another defunct race track.

Within the last year or so, going thru an old photo album of a driver, one photo caught my eye. Asking where this photos was taken, he replied that his mother took the photo and it was a track in Scotia. It was a photo taken in the mid 1940s of some very crude cars stripped down of the bodies and a makeshift roll bar. With that the only info I had I started researching on this track. All of my fellow racing historians had no info or was even aware of a track in Scotia. I asked many old timers at the car shows, still no leads. Finally at the Lost Speedway show, a gentelman confirmed that there was a track in Scotia. He left my table and came back with another fellow who also been there, and could give me the location of the track. One lady I spoke with, remembers racing in Collins Park which is right next to locaction where the track might be. I happen to have 2 different photos from 2 completely different albums that may be from this track and these people looked at the photos and they think it is this track. I also spoke with Bill Blair, a famous roadster driver from the 40s, and he knew about the track, but never raced there. So in just just a couple of hours, I think I can cinfirm that there was a track in Scotia N.Y.

The track was located on Sunnyside Rd. near the railroad tracks. It has now became the Glenville Dump. I still need to survey the area for any possible remains of a race track, but am not sure until I visit the site. In satellite images, I can pick out 2 different oval shapes. Or maybe some of the dirt roads could be parts of the old track. I have not been able to get any name of this track, so I will refer to it as Scotia Speedway.

I will need lots of help on digging up more info on this track, so if anyone has sources or relitives to ask, we might be able to uncover more infomation. In the photos that I have, there is a fence on one straight that has 8x8 post in the ground with guessing 6" planking nailed to post as a wall, about 3' high. The track looks like it dosent have alot of banking, but does seem to have a small dirt birm around the top of the corners. The photos I have were taken sometime in the 1940s.

I considered going, but decided to save the gas money for actual races emoticon

It did look like it would have been a very interesting day though, maybe next time.

Dan thanks for adding the new info on the newly discovered Lost Speedway.

This was also my first time to one of these popular Lost Speedways presentations. I enjoyed it very much and will certainly return for the fall meeting as well.

Dave Burnham, **** Vedder, and myself were all in attandance. I particularly liked Ken Gypson's presentation on Burden Lake, Pine Bowl, and Rt.66 Speedways. We are all very fortunate to have these knowledgeable people make the effort to prepare these presentations which both entertain and educate us.

I went because I was mostly interested in yhe Perth tracks, which are only about 6 miles from where I live.
The racing there took place while I was in the US Airforce.
I was personally acquainted with the four men mentioned albeit many years ago.

Yes, a great show! My first one but not my last. Great to meet you in person Bill and Mike. Great to see Danny's collection again and Ken's for the first time. I can't believe I spent over 4 hours there and didn't even come close to seeing everything and talking to everyone I wanted to.

I'm glad that there were several old-timer drivers in attendance. I hope someone was able to get a picture of them as a group.

Does anyone know who the guy was that had the early Lebanon Valley programs? He got away before I got a chance to look at them.

It was nice to me meet you too Joe. I did not see the LV programs, I got there 30 minutes late and went right upstairs to the discussions.

On another note, Danny told me that he received some photos from Carroll's Grove Speedway, formerly in Brunswick, NY. Just a few miles from where I work. I hope to see them some day soon Danny!

There is an old Mobil station in Brunswick Rt.7. I asked the [very elderly] owner if he remembered, and had ever been to Carroll's Grove. To my surprise he said yes! He did not race there but went there a couple of times to spectate. He said the place was kind of stark, with no bleachers, and spectators sat in the grass to watch. It was free to spectate as well. He thinks that the speedway was only open for two years. Do you know anything more about it Danny?

Those lost race track conferences are certainly great. I am disappointed that I didn't get to see Mike Kamm. I know he was there. I hope the museum can pony up for a better projector next time. I don't think half the room could really see my presentation.
