Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
This satellite location is incorect. Thanks to Jimmy Duncan researching, he spoke with the land owners, and this track was built only for horses. Last night I did speak with an Crescent Fire Dept. person, and they said he has heard stories on this track from the fire dept. I also spoke with George Proctor from Crescent, but he didnt have any info.
So I am still researching on this track for a location or any other info.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
I am convinced this is the speedway in Colonie that history books speak of with incorrect information. From the research I have done, and the local people I have talked to this track location has had at least 2-4 races between 1949-1951. I have spoke with 3 very different sources and all 3 speak of racing here. One was a junkyard about 2 miles east on Albany St. where my friends father owned the junkyard and he can remember his dad racing. He said he may have had photos of the track, but are probably long gone.I also spoke with a longtime neighbor of the track, and she remembers cars being towed into that track and did hear engine noises when she was a young child. Also a longtime race fan from Colonie has heard about auto races there, but not weekly, only a couple of races. In one of the corners are still old wooden fences.
The track is located near the corners of Albany St. and Morris Rd. and now has been used for horse training. I believe the property is now owned by the Leto Family (famed Lebanon Valley car owner).
I do not know who the property owner was at the time, or know of any promoters name, but from what I have been able to dig up, this seems to be the track.
If anyone has any other info or can contact anyone that may have info, please let me know.ROCK OF AGE SPEEDWAY AIRVIEW

SCOTIA SPEEDWAY
The track was located on Sunnyside Rd. near the railroad tracks. It has now became the Glenville Dump. I still need to survey the area for any possible remains of a race track, but am not sure until I visit the site. In satellite images, I can pick out 2 different oval shapes. Or maybe some of the dirt roads could be parts of the old track. I was told the backstretch ran along near the railroad tracks. I have not been able to get any name of this track, so I will refer to it as Scotia Speedway. Looking for anyone in the area to check this location or maybe any friends to contact, or even the historical society, library, anyone knowing knowledge of this area

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
Last week at the Richie Evans race, someone told me about a track just off RT.67 near Fulton-Montgomery Community College. He said there were a few old cars still back in the woods in real rough shape but can tell the were race cars , from what I am guessing, the cars are fom the late 40s to early 50s. He said that the track is still visible and can see outline of the track. There is also a couple of old shack buildings still on the property ,which may be pit shacks, or he thinks consession stands. I think he mentioned that the Dwyer Family may have been involved with this track. This is the first time for me of hearing about this track. Could this be another lost and forgotten speedway? I wanted to post this possible new information to hopefully find any info about this property or track. I will in the short furture try to find exact location, and maybe a satellite image. If anyone can ask around to the old timers of racing from this area, we might be able to dig up info on this track

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
Thats a new one on me and I live and grew up just a few miles from that location. I was in the Air Force from '48 to '52, so I don't know about that time. In '46&'47 I was helping my father and others build the Fulco Airport, now Fulton County Airport, which is on Rt.67 just a little ways west of FMCC. I din't hear anything about a track then.
Paul Dwyer was in my class in HS and runs a trucking company on cty rt 349,just off RT30. Don't know if he would have any info. He has been involved in local racing off and on.

This is very interesting Danny. Richard, your input is very interesting as well.
A tidbit I picked up yesterday regarding Pine Bowl:
I spoke with a former Pine Bowl racer named Rodney yesterday. I showed him this thread on a monitor at work and he said that there used to be a guy named Cliff Wilsey [a.k.a. "Rollover Wilsey"] that used to get paid $5 by the track for every time he could roll his car over, then back onto it's wheels, and keep going. Cliff became very adept at it and knew just where to turn into the berm at Pine Bowl. It was said that Cliff made more money doing this than the race winners ever did. And of course the fans loved it too!

OLD SPEEDWAY FOUND IN GUILDERLAND N.Y.
After the last 30 years trying to find this track, surveyed the site several times in the summer, looked on satellites, but I just could not figure out exactly how the track was layed out. I could only find 2 8x8 poles with some planking on it, in a thick heavly wooded-swampy area. I finally figured out how to actually see the track. I went out in the winter, figuring that the white of the snow would make me see farther in the woods and also see the terrain better. It worked, I found some banking, and straights, now the 2 8X8 fence poles made me understand where the track was.
This track was a small time jalopy track, that raced in the 1930s and closed before WWII. As far as I know, there are no known photos or anything of this track, I need to go to library to maybe find newspaper articles.
All of the layout in these photos are, Im guessing how the track was layed out, but on a snowy day this track sticks out like a sore thumb.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
That is terrific Danny. I admire your tenacity in finding the old tracks, especially ones from the 30's!
Thanks for sharing them with us.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
If any of you A.M.E.C. members have ever wondered were Kenny Marshall came from (racing wise) then you might know that his father was a driver at Fonda Speedway and other tracks back in the 50's and 60's. Mike Glock came across some old pictures of his dad Paul Marshall that you can see below.
Paul Marshall on the left with "Jeep" Herbert on the right after Jeep scored a win at Fonda.
