New Pine Bowl Speedway article.....

Congratulations goes out to Mr. Ken Gypson of Poestenkill for supplying the historic photos and for writing an excellent article on Pine Bowl Speedway in this month's Eastern Rodder magazine [on the newstands now]. I got my issue at Advance Auto Parts in east Troy [Wynantskill]. There are a lot of pictures, all with captions describing them.

I've got to share one story from the article.

In 1958, Jack Schleicher was the promoter of Pine Bowl Speedway and he decided to heavily promote and hold a special 200 lap race and pay $1,000 to win! This was BIG money in those days. He planned on winning his own money back by having his own driver, Sayles Casey [who won alot of races there] to drive for him. Well, Jack did too good of a job promoting this event and he drew a couple of hot shoes from CT named Red Foote and **** Dixon who came out and won 1st and 2nd place respectively, with Sayles finishing 7th. This was so financially crippling to Jack that he closed Pine Bowl for the remainder of the 1958 season! Ed Ryan took over as the track promoter for 1959 through the track's closing 1965 season.

Ken Gypson

I guess Joe didn't go [nor did I] but I did get some pics forwarded to me from this show forwarded by our good friend Greg Rickes. It looks like they had a nice turnout. I wasn't there so I don't have any names or histories on some of the cars. Others you'll recognize as I've already covered them earlier in this thread.

If you have any info, history, or stories on any of these cars, please chime in!

In the first picture, the #69 is Bruce Dostals replica of one of his race cars.

Is that the class they used to race at Albany Saratoga? What other cars ran in that class? What was the engine size limit?

The Volvo was Rich Graham’s mini mod. They mostly ran at Malta but they did Lebanon Valley and a bunch of other tracks. I think Hackle said they used to run 4 or 5 nights a week and could make money doing it! I think the class fell apart when Bill Wilman came out with the PVR V6 engined mini that Pete Vandecar built. 3 liters and 350 HP from what Pete has told me.

R.I.P. Paul Hacker

Just received a phone call that longtime friend Paul Hacker passed away this morning. The Hacker family has been involved with racing for over 70 years with ties from all the local speedways where his parents were active drivers, public relations ambassadors and big supporters of Lebanon Valley and Burden Lake Speedway. Paul and his brother Karl are very accomplished drivers racing on the National level of Road Race competiton, as well as local dirt track and ice racing . Are thoughts and prayers go out to the Hacker Family.
