The hoods were raised simply to go over a large, usually truck, radiator. The Ford flatheads were prone to over heating.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
In addition to the presentation at the Saratoga Auto Museum called "Lost Speedways" mentioned earlier in this thread [on the 24th], there is another similar event coming up this Saturday, November 17th in Colonie. I got this report from Paul Hacker:
Mike-
As one interested in Motorsports in general, please pass on to all AMEC members that there is a special gathering at the Midway Firehouse in Colonie next to Taft Furnature on Central Ave. Date Saturday. Nov 17th --- time is 6 PM on.
The object of this spelling meeting is to get together those interested in Motorsports from the 40s 50s 60s-- competitors and the old race tracks -like Pine Bowl-- State Line- Burden lake Rt 66, Whites Beach. But Ice racing should be a part of this. Any one interested should attend. Danny Ody is putting on this event. Danny has put together an amazing photos collection. He is asking all who have photos or press from that time to please share it. He has one of my early family film DVD's when my Dad raced his dirt oval modified. Please pass this on thru the club.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
Wow Danny Ody's big early stock car racing party at Midway Fire Hall was outstanding! There were early local racing legends all over the room. I mean the who's who of stock car racing in the Captial District were all there. There were a half dozen TV's and vcr's going with excellent footage from every local track named in this thread. And the FOOD! I couldn't believe the spread they put on!
A.M.E.C. members in attendance were Paul and Karl Hacker, Bruce Dostal, Kenny, Cindy, Jilly, Kennadi Marshall, and myself.
Ken Gypson was there, Bob James from Bobco video, too many to list.
It was much more than I ever expected. I was truly priveledged to be there tonight.
Thank you Mr. Dan Ody!
Once again as a reminder, the next event on this subject will be at the Saratoga Auto Museum next Saturday on November 24th. It is called "Lost Speedways". I highly recommend it.

Saratoga Auto Museum November 24th, 2007
Last call for tomorrow's presentation.
Claude said he is 99% sure he will be there. Is anyone else going?
"LOST SPEEDWAYS TWO" at the Saratoga Auto Museum
Saratoga Springs, NY. When the Saratoga Automobile Museum's Lost Speedways Two gets the green flag at 1 pm on Saturday, November 24th, the program will expand on April's extremely popular Lost Speedways presentation.
Ken Gypson will return to discuss the Pine Bowl, Burden Lake and Rt. 66 Speedways and will add Shippey's Speedway, a favorite haunt of the immortal Lee Wallard, to his presentation. Les King, whose talk on the Altamont Fairgrounds was an April hit, will also relate tales of the Empire Raceway in Menands. And those who remember the Warrensburg Speedway will enjoy Tom Remington's recollections of the North Country speedplant.
Vermont's Bill Ladabouche will show photos and discuss the Stateline, Fair Haven, Rutland and Catamount speedways, while Ed Biittig will tell the story of Richmondville's Sky High Speedway. Noted publisher and racer Lew Boyd will travel from Boston to recall the glory days of the Midstate Speedway in Morris and the Cairo Speedway.
National Speed Sport News columnist Gary London will tow in from Long Island to recall the glory days of Islip and Freeport Stadium, with a few more speakers currently making arrangements to participate.
Besides the speakers and their illustrations, collectors Dan Ody, Gypson, John Grady, King, Ladabouche, Otto Graham and Rick Perry, among others, will be on hand to share their photo and memorabilia collections. Tables will also be available for visitors to display their treasures to fellow fans, all under the watchful eye of a crew of museum volunteers.
Other highlights will include old movies by Syracuse's Don Bartlett that will bring the Waterloo, Watertown and other long-gone tracks back to life for the day, audience participation segments and a video camera set-up to record everyone's recollections of their favorite speedways for posterity.
Pack your car with your treasures, polish up your favorite stories and recruit a friend to share the fun. We'll be there until the last tale has been told and all your old friendships renewed.
The Saratoga Automobile Museum is located on the Avenue of the Pines in the Saratoga Spa State Park. More information on the museum, the Racing in New York gallery and the current Golub Gallery exhibit, Barn Finds, is available online at www.saratogaautomuseum.org.

"Lost Speedways" at the Saratoga Auto Museum
Claude and the boys went to this event. I was out of town and missed it. Claude said it was great and that it was standing room only. Must have been very popular!

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
I went also. It was very interesting. Brought back a lot of memory's because I had either spectated or participated at several of them.
Bruce Dostal and his wife were there also.
Bruce and I were talking about how simple things, race cars etc, were in the old days.
And more fun.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
Dear early A.M.E.C. members,
I have been contacted by a former A.M.E.C. racer who used to race a Morgan with us - on dirt and on ice. Below is a copy of what he wrote. If any of you can shed any light on helping fill in the blanks here please elaborate for us.
"Mr Kamm,
My name is Russ Kincaid. I have had a bit of "A blast from the past" recently. Thanks to Jake Alderson from the UK, who is doing a book on Morgan history. Somehow he found me and has put me in touch with a couple of guys I competed with in the mid 1960s. I did a few of the early ice races at Lake George in a Morgan and also in a Saab. Also did another AMEC event in Saabs, an MG1100, and also in a friend's Sunbeam Alpine. This was an autocross on a "dirt track" in a field North of Amsterdam, I think. I have a memory of an "older man" [HA!] who was extremely fast in his Saab GT 750!! I remember beating his track record in the Dealer's new MG 1100 I was running. Then him driving the 1100 (which he had never been in before) and setting a new track record!! Great guy and great driver and I cannot come up with his name. I think he is probably 100 years old now if still alive. Any ideas on what info is out there on this??
Thanks,
Russ Kincaid
Does anyone know anthing about this dirt track race [perhaps north of Amsterdam] that Russ is referring to? He said it was an A.M.E.C. event. And who might the "older guy" be that he befreiended many years ago?

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
He probably means the Charlton track and it's probably Richard Vedder, he's not 100 yet but I think he did have a Saab GT 750 for a while. I am sure Richard will chime in soon. I think there is a Morgan on the AMEC history DVD. Thanks for posting that Mike.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District
You're welcome Dave. I just got off of the phone with Russ and suggested the same person and track location. He did not seem to remember ****'s name. I asked him if the 750GT was white [like ****'s was], but he said he thought it was red. Perhaps **** will remember him though. We may both be end up being correct.
