Great time out there today! 6 hour drive each way totally worth it. The ice surface was a little iffy (damn snowmobiles) but being out on the ice for 3 hours was great..

Thanks to all those who made this event happen, and also to the other drivers for letting my car get away unscathed! emoticon

Re: NMIRA ice races are ON for Sunday Feb. 24th!

I'm glad all that made the long trip had a good time.I was so exhausted when i got home sun. night i didn't even look at the scoring sheets. Chris (our lone scorer) will be doing that today.
I was very pleased with the race. everyone was very well behaved and all had a good time. I was very impressed with the sl drivers that braved the race with their very nice cars. From what i could see when i was racing, they were very aware of cars around them. That i figure comes from your no contact rule. I was suprised that oleg was mixing it up with the stud cars he gave a couple of bumper shots but no damage to either.(plastic saturns)
I was hoping that the audi driver (i don't know his name) would open it up. During practice that car was flying and i had thought that he would put a hurtin' on the field, but i guess he had alt. problems and dropped out. hope to see him back in the awd class. It was nice to watch the race for awhile while my co-driver (paul glynn, alfa driver) drove the first two hours.
As you saw, it's not the fast cars that were winning,as they broke. A quick look at the score sheets i figure that either the saab, del sol, aspire(s) or the metro were the winners as they did not pit or had offs.
the track was a 1.8 mi. road course and had alot of railroad tracks on it. We are going to get a snow to rain storm tues.-wed. then it's going to get very cold wed.-sat. We will get the plow rigs out on the track during the storm to flatten and fill the voids and let the rain water freeze in the voids.
Next week is s screw tire race day. Menards are welcome. As i mentioned to mike, i will fit in 3-4 10-15 min. races for sl cars if there is enough interest. We will use your AMEC rules for these. the only thing you will need is a set of scorers and a couple of corner marshalls.
Thanks to all that showed up and hopefully we'll see you soon. Bob Koenig,NMIRA

Bob:

Thanks for all your hard work to make this race happen and to Chris for doing ALL the scoring. I had a great time. Thanks too to all your regular racers for giving us a little extra room and allowing us to race for three hours with no contact. Great Weekend!

Re: NMIRA ice races are ON for Sunday Feb. 24th!

Big thank you goes to all NMIRA organizers, especially Bob, for holding the race last weekend. I had an awesome time.

Yes, I may have been a little reckless out there. I took the start easy but found good lines and raced for position the last 2/3 of the race. At one point I was following the Geo Metro as it simultaneously braked hard and went sideways in what was my straight line braking zone in one of the turns. I couldn't do much but t-bone its passenger side. I didn't see any damage on the Metro and I got a small dent in under bumper plastic that might come out.

At the very end I also scraped the side of the turbo VW I think it was as I was coming out of a snow bank. I was feeling pressure from #29 car coming up behind me that I had been battling for most of the race and decided to take my chances. Had it been earlier in the race I would've done the pass safely (and I passed it before with sufficient room plenty of times to prove it).

This winter's AMEC and NMIRA events were my first wheel to wheel races ever and I'm hooked. Clearly I still have much to learn but I'm ready and willing.

Top speed for the event: 75 mph. Top speed going sideways: 60 or 65 mph emoticon

I'm sure most the die-hard racers weren't thrilled to have rolling obstacles on the course, but it was a great opportunity for us. If only I had something studded!

Well worth it at any rate. Thanks again Bob! emoticon

I just couldn't bring myself to go, I was too concerned about me and my WRX getting in the way of the serious guys on studs. I didn't want to spend three hours focused on my mirrors. Many of the AMEC guys make me nervous, I assumed NMIRA was even more aggressive. emoticon

Glad it went off well, I will definitely go next weekend if the NY lakes fail us. Thanks Bob for the generous offer to put up with us.

Paul

Hi guys, glad to hear the nice feedback from your racing experience up here.Just finished up the scoring and 1st and 2nd were only 100' from each other at the end of the race.
 1st:sandy fotter saab 900 80 laps
2nd:vern warren honda del sol 80 laps
 3rd:joey cousins nissan 79 laps
4th:chris thompson acura truck 79 laps
5th:mike st. germain ford aspire 78 laps
  other notibles:
8th:oleg pudeyev saturn wagon 77 laps
15th: josh wortzel suzuki 74 laps
18th: chris word mazda 64 laps
 20th:dimitri lechtchinsk mazda rx8 51 laps
  mike kamm 14 laps
  dave fazzino 29 laps
(my chioce for winner if he had not broke)
there were 6 cars with a total of 77 laps,3 with 78 laps. and that was after 3 hours of racing.
The final rundown and the scoring sheets will be posted on the website by vern.
We will be holding sprint races this sun. if the conditions permit. We are going to plow the upcoming snow/rain tommorrow night so the potholes will fill up before it freezes solid on thurs.-fri.the only change to the track will be the loss of the chicane on the front stretch.1/2 mile straight stretch anyone???
More snow is predicted for sat. but that's 5 days away.( i don't trust them weathermen)
Like i've posted before, if you guys want to run SL races between the screw tire races we have no problem with that as long as you can provide scorers to score the races.

18th. I knew I finished ahead of somebody. Ended up faster than one of the studded guys, but was down many laps on him by that time. How many cars were there in the race total?

I might have had around 70 laps if I hadn't come out of the race for 15min to pull off my broken brake dust shield. The scraping freaked me out for a minute!

The competition wasn't the important part, it was all about the track time -- I really nailed threshold braking from 75 into the 20mph corner by the end of the day. The guy in the #90 Neon gave me the thumbs up after I beat his line through that corner. emoticon

Re: NMIRA ice races are ON for Sunday Feb. 24th!

Glad to see such obviously demented ice racers this past Sunday. We thought 3 hours to race on Moosehead lake was a huge sacrifice but 6 or 7 or 9??? And as you can see from Oleg, the Blizzaks can under the right conditions be competitive. A couple more races under his belt and his 3 laps down will be a different story I'm sure. Including 3 hour enduros at Moosehead, New Meadows and sprint races at Sebago Derbyfest, our various Hondas with my son Ben and/or I driving have recorded a first, 2 thirds, a fourth and a fifth. Under the wrong conditions the Blizzaks are out to lunch. So we switched to studded Hakka II's and for the first hour Sunday the little, old CRX was pretty much untouchable. UNFORTUNATELY, the race went on for the other two hours while our CRX sat in the pits with a broken ball joint and cv joint/axle. The man was right, to finish first, first you have to finish. C'est la vie. See you all next week?? (We don't screw tire race but will be there to help out if needed). martin k

ps: Any interest in used blizzaks (ws 15, ws 50, 13 inch? 207-347-0251
