quote: Tom Compoli wrote:
and btw, i like that techinal guy from belgium, i may need to listen to him in order to get this show on the road a bit.
maybe some more important tips for getting it on the road...
-Get more competitors, from all kinds of motorsport... Start a real rallycross organisation, get someone who can create a site, someone who can create an official regulation (or can adjust existing european regulations to your standards), and maybe even an american rallycross championship (you don't need much prizemoney: a heatvictory is even in our national championship only 5 euros, and the prizemoney for overall victory isn't even enough for paying the fuel you burned by racing...). Show other racers videos of rallycross, of all kinds (so the top european races, but also amateur races, which is the kind of races you first will have...
-Get money: this contains multiple kinds of funding. First, you need to attract sponsors. Sponsors for the administrative costs, for the circuit, for the marshalls, but also personal sponsors for the drivers, so they have a bigger budget for getting their cars up to rallycross standards... This doesn't need that you only can use the big company's... mostly little company's (a bakery, a garage were you get your parts) from people you personal know (contacts are everything) are your best funding: they give little, but every cent you get from sponsors, is one you doesn't need to invest yourself. Also important, is getting rich competitors on it... They will probably beat you, but the cars they build/let build are mostly up to the highest standards, and maybe they even import european rallycross cars... Such cars will raise the level of your organisation, so you can grow...
The last part of raising funds is finding someone who doesn't even now how to spend all of is money, and who is really obsessed by rallycross... They can build a circuit, or put fortunes in some teams budgets (like Tom Hvaal, a Norwegian industrial who sponsors almost all norwegians which drive in the ERC (European Rallycross Championship)
-Get some public: In Europe, rallycross is such an attractive sport because is it amusement instead of business: income is low (free under 12 year, 50% between 12-16 year:: 10 euros for a regional/national raceday, 35 euros for 2 days of ERC (from 9 to 5)). It is also public during races: you go by the teams during the breaks, take a look while they are servicing their car or taking a rest, you can even have a talk with the european topdrivers... All of this makes rallycross in Europe an unknown, little sport, with a little but loyal fanbase... and in Belgium and Holland, we can get till 15000 spectators during ERC-races...
If you got all this things i mentioned, then you've surely put rallycross in the air in America... some are easy to get done, some will take longer before you reached your goal...
I think it is the most important to get the official thing done by the 2009 season, get a site (even if it is only information, without any graphics), get a calendar (try not to have clashing dates with autocross/rally/... (related) races, and don't cancel races, rallycross can always be raced) and get the regulations done... you can make it not so strict, but don't try to save money on safety (imo, a FIA homologated safety suit, shoes and gloves, a homologated helm, a rollcage which is controlled on safety by the organisation and a fuel tank are a must, altough this last one is very costly if bought new... I don't know if you can find them second hand in the USA, otherwise you can keep it to stock fuel tanks... Also windows (layered glass with safety film in front, and lexan/plexigas for other windows) will raise safety (no rocks flying into window, and a barrier between ground and body when the car rolls) and raise the profile (windowed cars resemble much more stock cars). Also important are following features: 2 rear foglights (or other 21watt bulbs), which hang at the height of the ****pit (i'll give the precise measurements another time), and which work instead of or togheter with the original brakelights. A switch which can turn of all electricity at one time (a sort of killswitch) on the dash, so placed that the driver, placed in his seat, with is safety belts tight, can still reach the switch. A second switch (which may be linked to the first one) should be accesible from the outside, on a place easy reachable for marshalls (under the outside of the front window, for example). the so-called R-clips (i will post a picture of it) to replace the original locks off the hood and the trunk.
I'll post more tips and infos on European rallycross the next days, aswell as some vids about rallycross (on different levels of competition)

Re: 2008 Glad Rag Euro-Rallycross Series
Here are some videos...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHtHVY2UgEU&feature=related
This shows a whole race for the German Rallycross Championship (DRX), seen from the inside of a Ford Fiesta ST 1600 Div-1a car (ERC-built, got a 1600cc engine with 200-225Bhp and a sequential gearbox (blue light on dash is launch control i guess)
The race starts with a short timed practise (one in-lap, and two seperate timed laps, from which the best counts for the start order for heat 1), then a part of one of the three heats that are raced during the day are shown (with a rarity in rallycross: in germany they mix up the classes during the heats, and the yellow ford focus in front is a Division 1 WRC/T16-type car, with AWD and a 500+ Bhp engine), and then the final, the most important part of the day... You also get some views from in the paddock..
Here is also a picture of that car: http://www.rallycross-photo.com/photos07/20070527/43.jpg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6kTLR6QOWY&feature=related
This is a video report of the same raceday for the DRX: It's shows views from the heats (were classes are mixed up and 5 cars start all on one line) and from the finals (which were driven by class, and were the starting order is something like this:
5 6
3 4
1 2
Pole-Position
The included classes are the D1 (2-litre turbo 4WD / +500Bhp / 0-62mph in 2-3 seconds), D1a (1.6-litre atmospheric FWD / +200Bhp), D4 (division 3 in Belgium, Supercars 2WD in Holland, Supermodified in UK and Supernational in Scandinavia / free capacity (according to weight, see earlier post of me)/2WD (FWD or RWD)/also older cars) and D5 (exists only in Germany, was an former European class (FIA -1400 Gr.N Cup) / -1400cc stock cars / +-100Bhp / mostly peugeot 106 and citroën ax)
http://www.motorsportmad.com/view/4901/rallycross-crash-erc-holland-2004
This is a start of a D2-heat (2-litre atmospheric stock cars / +-200Bhp / 2WD) of the ERC, and you see which things are very common, and why you should foresee sand traps between the outer walls and the track...
http://www.motorsportmad.com/view/5334/rallycross-crashes
These are some more crashes, which probably also would occur at your side of the ocean...
But don't be afraid, the last deadly "accident" is already some years ago, when a Dutch driver got a heart attack in the last round of the final, when he finally would have had a podium... before that, the last deadly accident occured in 97-98 (i am not sure), when a car flew into the crowd... since then, the FIA rallycross circuit safety rules are much stricter... And the last accident where a driver has died, can't i really not remember, thanks to all safety features in the cars and the driver's equipment...
http://www.motorsportmad.com/view/2234/rallycross-erc-belgium-2007---division-1
This is a 3 car heat in D1 during an ERC-race (or: the best of the best). If you watch well, you maybe got the clue of the joker lap at the same time...
http://www.vas.be/fotos2008/video/rallycrossA.wmv
http://www.vas.be/fotos2008/video/rallycrossB.wmv
http://www.vas.be/fotos2008/video/rallycrossC.wmv
These are three videos from our regional rallycross championship, which is a pure amateurlevel (so it has the same level as the one you are trying to reach now...)
On the third video, you see the driver's briefing (the race leader has a talk with all members of the race commission and all the drivers, to repeat the most important elements of the sporting code (sportive behaviour and such things) and to give some information about the state of the track etc...
I'll post more vids if i find some...

Re: 2008 Glad Rag Euro-Rallycross Series
Hello Jelle,
I am very impressed with your enthusiasm for Rallycross! I very much enjoyed the video links you provided too.
Our group is not nearly that organized nor do most of us expect it to become that way. We kind go out a few times a year and have a little fun. Our track is mostly sand and ruts up pretty easily. We certainly wish we had a great racing facility like they had in the video clip in Germany. None of us have that kind of money to spend though.
Have you ever driven in any rallycross events in Belgium?

Re: 2008 Glad Rag Euro-Rallycross Series
I never drove it (Till now, I failed twice for my driving exam, and a valid drivers license is required. Also, the budget for driving it is too high. altough I'm planning to build a Peugeot 205 for folkrace (the lowest level of rallycross, altough i didn't found video's of it...) with a tight budget of not even 1000 euros...), however i nearly miss never a race, and i'm mecanic in a team (MR Autosport, http://www.mr-autosport.be ).
And rallycross exists pretty long down here, al those tracks are made in 60s/70s, and have made a long way of improvement... So the track in the vid and your track aren't comparisable at all, but i want to show you the blueprint of the track... If you can get the layout allright, you can improve slightly on... But if you got a totally wrong layout, you improve that, and then you discover you have to start over totally... you see what i mean?
