AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Edit: The title of this thread has been updated for the upcoming August 23rd event. Originally, this thread was started by Dave Burnham and it announced the first Economy Run which was held on August 10, 2008. We didn't want to start a new thread and lose all of the earlier info, hence this edit. To pick up where the discussion for Economy Run III starts, please go to page 36.

Greetings fellow hypermilers. For those of you located in the northeast, the Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club A.M.E.C. will be holding a Fall Foliage "Economy Run" coming up this October 5, 2008. These events are far and few between. Take advantage of this unique opportunity.
 
A little history: A.M.E.C. held it's first Economy Run back in 1954. Now 54 years later with record high fuel prices, the club decided to bring the event back. Our members created a new course and the event took place this past August 10th. It was very well received and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. Results can been seen here. It was a good dry run to make sure everything went smoothly and that our laptop excel program worked properly to calculate the results. We enjoyed it so much that we have planned an "Economy Run II" and this time would like to open it up to like minded individuals who would like to join us. To keep it easy to manage and fun we will limit registration to the first 20 entrants.
Here were the details from Economy Run II:
What: Fuel mileage contest through the southern Adirondacks of NY. The route will be on really nice scenic and challenging roads and will run 121.5 miles in distance. Your “economic” driving ability will be tested. Cars will be filled with fuel by an AMEC official and then weighed on electronic scales. There will be a 3 hour time limit to complete the run. Any street legal vehicle is allowed to participate, [including motorcycles]. This event will run rain or shine.
Where: The starting spot will be at the Fairway Oil gas station on Route 5 in Fonda, NY. [directions below].
When: Sunday, October 5th, 2008. Arrival time will be 8:00-8:30am, first car off at 9:00am. They have gas and diesel and have a large enough parking lot that we won’t be in the way. (They also don’t use ethanol, if that makes a difference to anyone.)
Cost: $10 per vehicle
Awards include:
1. Best overall mpg for gas cars
2. Best overall mpg for diesel and hybrid cars
3. Best ton-mile per gallon [TMPG] vehicle weight in pounds, divided by 2000, times miles driven, divided by gallons consumed. A handy calculator is here.
4. Best carbureted mpg
5. Best miles per dollar. [Based on the actual cost to travel the 106 miles. For example, we had a diesel VW Jetta get 56 mpg and a Dodge Avenger get 48 mpg. Because the diesel fuel was about a dollar more per gallon than the gasoline, the Avenger won this contest.]
Note: If we get more than one motorcycle we will add a class for them.
Awards: This event will conclude about noon, and our plan is to proceed up the nearby Checkers Out Go-Kart track for lunch, awards, and optional indoor go-kart races if you so desire. Checkers Out Speedway is an indoor go kart track open year round, and is located about ¾ of a mile south of Johnstown, NY, on NYS Route 30A. Physical address: 2299 State Hwy 30A Johnstown, NY 12905. Directions: to Fairway Oil gas station: Take NY Thruway Exit 28. After the toll booth, turn left onto Riverside Drive. Then turn right onto South Bridge Street and go over the bridge. On the other side of the bridge is a traffic light. You can see Fairway Oil and Gas on your left. Turn left onto Route 5 and enter the station.

All members and families are encouraged to come!! There will be a special award for the best mileage per number of people per car. Other awards include: Absolute Best MPG, Best MPG per ton, Worst MPG, and possibly the Best MPG while running the route fastest!
The route will be on some really nice scenic and challenging roads where your “economic” driving ability will be tested. The route will pass by some of the lakes we race on in the winter, an interesting point for the people that have never seen the lakes un-frozen.
At present, the ending point is the same Fairway Oil where all the tanks will be topped up (under the AMEC officials’ eye…. again). The time you arrive back at Fairway will be recorded and you’re “no cheating tags” will be collected. (You will learn more about that the day of the economy run!)
All driving laws must be obeyed. There may be penalties for any traffic tickets you get for speeding, etc. Also, no one may shut their car off and pull out their keys while driving. We don’t want any crashes with locked steering columns, etc.
After the Economy Run, we will proceed up to Subik’s place for the party [directions below]. The results will be tallied there and the awards will be given out. Remember, we will also be giving out the ice race trophies, too! Please encourage everyone to come!!

Hi Jeff, actually I am hoping someone brings a really different car like that so we can really see what one does, and I think this drive would not be optimal for a Prius I believe they do best in city situations. That’s also why we made 4 different trophy categories, it keeps everything interesting.
Hey Jeff this is one event you can drive in not much picture taking action except for the beautiful scenery!

It's a great day to be an A.M.E.C. member!
Dave this sounds really cool and I am really looking forward to it. I am impressed with the thought and effort you and Bryon are putting into it. Ramps for getting on and off the scales are a very nice touch!
I've been away on vacation this week and have cooked up some ideas for preparing the Protege for this event. It will look a bit weird, but there will be some obvious aero tweaks. 
The picnic will be the icing on the cake!

Hi Ernie,
I have been wondering if anyone would ask about motorcycles, I don't see any reason why not maybe we will give a special motorcycle award. If it gets you to come to the party I would say yes. I will verify though with my co organizer Bryon to be sure before the event.

Good to hear from you Ernie. I think it would be interesting to have a bike in the running. They are light, so they would likely not be a factor in the pounds per mpg award.

Dave and Mike, even if motorcycles are not officially scored, I think I'd show up anyway, just to see what mpg the bike can get under non "drive it like you stole it" conditions. The bike is a 2008 Ninja 250 - the 249 cc's of parallel twin dohc fury  At idle, it sounds like a tractor lawn mower with a hint of Harley like putt-putt.
I just bought it from Powerhouse in Mayfield two weeks ago, and have been driving it relatively hard to break it in - average mileage is currently around 50-55 mpg. Supposedly once it's broken in, it can get 60-70. I just hope no one brings their 150 cc Vespa.

Pretty cool bike Ernie!
I thought you might have one of those 1300cc superbikes or something. I've heard some of those only get like 35-40 mpg. But that's a little screamer you've got there. I hope to see you there with it!
