Re: Economy Run and Go-Kart Challenge! October 5th

Maybe we better check with Tom Compoli about October 5th since he had the date first for the rally cross (I did not realize that) Tom has not been very communicative on the rally stuff.

If I remember correctly to get a Checkers out Go Kart track license it is $10 and each 50 lap race was $15 per person. It is hard to say when we would be done but last time we were out of there with racing, diner, and the meeting in 3 or 4 hours.

As far as how many cars to participate in the Economy run that all depends on how long it would take to weight them probably about 20 would be the max. Any one have any other thoughts on the number of cars?

I think 20 cars max will be fine. I'd prefer to keep the October 5th date if possible. Although the 12th will work too. Later in the month are other events like the VSCNA Fall Drive and Accord enduro.

I'm ready to start promoting it on the Ecomodder and clean mpg forums. We have to set the date first though.

Guys this is really shaping up. Thanks for the input!

I am OK with the 5th as long as everyone else is. Tom seems to have vaporised maybe we should remove the referances to the rally cross date.

I knew that our Economy Run events were very unique, because I searched the internet and couldn't find any others like it. But I did not expect drivers to be signing up from Kentucky and other states. There are interested parties contacting me from IN, RI, NH, and TN!

And the threads have only been up for one day. emoticon

I'd say if you plan to run you better speak up quickly because this is going to fill up fast!

We have permission to use the Gas station for the Economy run on Oct. 5. I would like to start and stop there this time, the Go Kart track is right up the hill. We also have a reservation for 1:30 for the Go Kart track for approx. 20 people. If we run more than once, I will have to notify Don.

So many ideas, so little time......

OK here's my latest plan for Economy Run II. I will be using my carbureted '77 Datsun B210. It is a natural choice of course, because economy is exactly what the car was built for in the first place. Of course I spent the last five years or so collecting parts to build the engine for more power and speed. You see, my car's original 1400cc engine has been modified to 1608cc's, has twin Dellorto 40mm carbs, small Crane cam, and is fairly high compression at 10.25 to 1. But now I'm thinking about going back to where I was in the first place - or maybe even further.

Well, the plan was to remove the side drafts and reinstall the original intake and tiny Hitachi carburetor. Then Dave Burnham pointed out that the high compression I am running is a great thing for gas mileage. I had forgotten about that fact. Hmm, that got me thinking and reading. In this month's Hemmings Classic Car magazine there is an article called "The Big Squeeze". It's all about compression ratios and how it effects power and economy. On page 64 it states: "Increases in compression ratio do not only impact power generation; they also create gains in fuel efficiency. The higher the static compression ratio, the more fuel efficient it will be. This is the reason for diesel's superior economy over spark ignition engines."

It goes on to say that: "If an engine having an original static compression ratio of 8.0 to 1 was increased to 11.0 to 1, power would rise by only 5.2 percent, but fuel economy would improve nearly 20 percent!"

Now I'm having silly thoughts about building another Datsun engine specifically for fuel mileage. I have all of the parts to do it. Nuts huh? Well maybe not. Remember, we are the Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club. This is what we're all about isn't it?

Shame on the people who think we are just an ice racing club! emoticon

I like it Mike with the right cam, high compression, small carb and proper driving technique you could have yourself a real economy star! One of the benefits of a small carburetor is that it is open a lot most of the time and that reduces the vacuum or negative work of the engine. Diesels have no throttle plate so the engine is not fighting that negative work.

I also agree 100% that AMEC is an enthusiasts club and no body is more enthusiastic than you that’s cool!
