That's right Dave. One of the things that was said about the overdrive, anybody remember them, that it not only reduced rpm but it increased the throttle opening which improved the mileage also.

Then back in the last gas crisis a big thing was the "economy camshaft".

I just read where GM has altered the cam timing on some of its engines to improve mileage.
Now if we could get PH to run his hydrogen conversion in the economy run.

Interesting stuff there Richard, thank you. I remember the Isky "Mile a More" cam my brother had in his '71 350 Camaro.

Paul Hacker told me [before the first Economy run] that the event did not suit his competitive side. He [and the other 100 Street Legal drivers on my list] have not replied to my announcement of this event. Kind of disappointing but par the course the SL driver pool in general.

I'd love to put Paul's hydrogen generator to a real test.

What a good way to promote the "advantages" of the hydrogen thing than an economy run.
Hey, competition is competition, whether you are walking or racing a car.
Maybe there is another reason he doesn't want to compete in an economy run, you think ?

I assume these guys coming from other states, like this fellow from KY, know there is no prize money involved (or is there??) Just seems sort of crazy to drive that far for this event, though it is sort of cool this has that kind of interest.

Jeff, some people take this type of challenge very seriously. This same gentleman told me that to come to NY is a walk in the park compared to the Economy Run he did recently in Seattle! These types of events are not easy to find and are more than worth the trip for people who really enjoy them. He is fully aware that no prize money is being offered.

How about you Jeffy. Are you still considering it?

I don't know Mike, I will not know until the last minute..so I will just let the list fill up for those are are more serious about it than I am (since I would just be there to screw around anyway emoticon)

If somehow you do not fill the list of 20 cars I may add my name to the mix at the last minute...........but I would prefer to let other have a crack at it first, certainly since I doubt I will go anyway.

Dirt track season is about over, that weekend there are some big races I may end up going to.

Re: Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge! October 5th

I don't know how Mike has the time to build these projects, I still haven't had the time to swap out my 240Z engine. My last 240Z got 30 MPG around Sacandaga Lake with no O/D and 3:90 gear. The old SU carbs had great gas mileage.

I just picked up a 280Z before it hit the scap yard. This would give me a 5 speed O/D, electronic ingnition and nice low gear ratio. Maybe next year I will run it. If anyone knows of old Z cars, I collect them for parts. I have 4 now with lots of extra parts.

Bryon a stock engine is easy to build. No porting, no blueprinting, just wash the parts and put them together. emoticon

I just thought of some more tricks to help out my effort. Get rid of the stock belt driven fan and install an electric one. In my attic I've got a B210 fiberglass front spoiler as well.

The carburetor has an electric fuel shut off solenoid to keep it from "dieseling" after shutting it off. That can be activated while coasting as well. The possibilities are almost endless.

All I can say is: Mark Long watch out buddy! emoticon
