Re: Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge! October 5th
I like that bet/challenge Mark and Mike K that Datsun add is great. The advertised MPG is better than my Diesel VW usually gets. I would buy any body’s gas (at the end of the economy run) that can get better gasoline mileage than my Diesel gets! I used 1.88 gallons last time so it’s not a big bet but if I can duplicate my 56 mpg and any gasoline only car (not a hybrid) can beat it I will pay for your fill up all 2 gallons worth!

Sounds great Dave. I accept all bets!
It looks like I reeled in another competitor for this event. One of the guys I was muscle car racing with at the Valley this weekend is a Mazda tech. His 2.0 liter 2003 Protege gets 45 mpg! He sounds very interested and should make a nice addition to the gasser class.

Re: Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge! October 5th
I was hanging out with a bunch of Mopar guys this weekend and we started talking about gas mileage. I learned something very interesting indeed. In 1976 Dodge [and Plymouth with their Duster] offered special economy gas mileage versions of their Dart and Duster models. Dodge called theirs the "Dart Lite" and Plymouth, the "Feather Duster". These were actually rare as they strangely they did not sell well. There is no known documentation as to the exact breakdown of exactly how many Dart Lites were built from the total number of other Darts, but it is estimated that only between 30 and 50 cars left the factory!

This was a Dart Sport made as light as possible with an aluminum hood, trunk bracing and bumper brackets, an aluminum intake manifold on the 225 CID Slant-6 engine for the first time since 1960, specially-calibrated single barrel carburetor and distributor, and economy rear axle ratio. When the Overdrive-4 speed manual transmission is ordered with the Lite package, the transmission case is made of aluminum. The overdrive-4 manual transmission has a 0.73:1 final drive ratio which allows cruising at highway speeds with minimum engine revolutions. The Dart Lite was 180 lbs. lighter than the normal Darts and rated by the EPA at 36 highway mpg!

Republic Aviation Co. Employees Motor Sports club?
Here is a very interesting reply posted by a fellow Clean MPG forum member regarding our event thread there. Has anyone ever heard of the club he mentions in it?
Mike,
Besides being a hypermiler, I'm also a collector of vintage Micro and Mini cars and the memorabila that goes along with them. I have a few "Small Cars" and "Small Car Parade" magazines from the 50s and 60s that mention a NY event that sounds very much like the event you are bringing back to life. The club name is different, but the first year of the event, place, distance, speeds, ton miles, weighing and other rules sound very simular. The club mentioned in the old magazine is the Republic Aviation Co. Employees Motor Sports club. (This is the company that built my 1947 Republic Seabee RC-3 amphibian airplane) Is your club an outgrowth of this Republic club? Some of the numbers from the old days were very impressive and they didn't have hybrids, Sgii , GPS or other modern tools. The winner of the 1958 event got 70.34 actual MPG and 91.43 ton MPG in a Volvo and the 1959 winner got 97.4 actual and 122.5 ton MPG driving a Triumph TR3. There was an NYPD detective, George Spagna, that was active in the early events that scored a 75.6, 99.85, 129.5, 60.96, 66.95 in VWs and Porsche's. I wonder if he's still around? Due to bad weather they only had a little less then 70 cars in the 58 and 59 events but were prepaired for 150. Sounds like a fun event and I wish I could join you , but it's a long way from Phoenix. Have fun, save gas.....Louis

Dave
The Republic Aviation Co. was based in Farmington NY, on Long Island during WWII and a bit later.
They made the famous P-47 fighter. That must of been a cool club to be a part of with all those resources.

Re: Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge! October 5th
Thanks Mark.
I'd love to hear some stories about what their course length was and what tricks these people used to get 70 mpg out of their early cars. I'll bet it would be very interesting.
It is ironic that after all of the work I will do to the B210 to make the drivetrain more appropriate for the Economy Run II event, that Bruce Turk's VSCNA Fall Drive is just two weeks later. And I'll want all of the twin carb 1608cc power back for that! I guess I'll just get in line and follow the low powered Saab 2-strokers in the historic group and look at the pretty colored leaves.

Well, you have two weeks to change it back.
Should be a piece of cake for you.
