Oh, mike, wanted to tell you. Cardboard and duct tape work ok, but as you found out cardboard and water don't mix. I wrap my cardboard in garbagebags taped tight or for small pieces just wrapped in duct tape. http://www.gassavers.org/garage/view/739
At one point I had just one openning the size of my hand or so. All that's removed for the summer though, not sure I'll risk putting it back on or not.

Thanks for the tips, [?]. Don't be shy, tell us your name. BTW, you have currently not yet asked to be signed up for this event. If you intend to enter, better let me know. In a day or two, there likely won't be any spots left.

....pretty impressive I'd say as we're still about a month away from the event. emoticon

Best tank yet!

I changed to a lighter 5W-20 oil in my Protege last week and [left it a quart low on purpose]. I took the tires up another 5 psi and started hypermiling. This is how I am doing so far.....

Best yet by far even though it's been cool out in the morning's now [less mpg's with exteneded warmup times]. Scan Gauge should be coming tomorrow. Things are getting interesting. emoticon

You are focused Mike that’s neat! Looks like you will break 500 miles on your tank without a problem.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

What's the engine have to do with anything? That shell looks light enough you should install some bicycle pedals and get 3 friends in the car to help you emoticon.

Also, I'm Chris Werner, I had been on the board a bit a couple years back, I really wanted to Ice Race but never got around to fully prepping my MR2 and being mostly rust (great weight savings) I decided to sell it and have since picked up a 1st gen CRX with every bolt in front of the firewall removed (he was going to pull and swap the engine). So now I've Grooved the head (http://www.somender-singh.com/) and shaved a LOT off and hoping to squeeze as much compression I can without hitting my valves (which is why the engine was being pulled to begin with, darn interference Hondas). But I still have to figure out the wiring harness and gazillion vacuum hoses and every other missing item under the hood and pick the right bolt from the zip lock bag labels 'bolts'. So it'll be a while and sadly it's an automatic, but hey it was $100 and the CVCC engine is really cool.

Lastly, I hadn't fully signed up yet because I was just kicking around ideas and wasn't sure I could really make the date. But, now I know I can make the date and my friend is giving me a car (he has at least 12 or something) which I should have registered and prepared by then (can you say HAI and fuel cutoff).

So, please sign me up, Chris Werner, 1991 Ford Festiva :-).

Lastly, Mike I'm envious of your scangauge make sure to get lots of practice. I think the country roads are best handled with EOC P&G. Some evening go out and try Pulse & Glide, on a country road go to 50MPH then neutral and cruise to 30MPH then accelerate fairly spiritedly (the goal is to accelerate at SFC of the engine) and then repeat. Should see a good change to your average.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

Thought of one more thing I wanted to comment on. I was under the impression from my friends (but don't actually know first hand) that there was a way to disable the gas engine from engaging on the Prius and drive as an EV for the 10-15 mile range it has (though going too far could kill your pack). I'm sure the Prius owner wouldn't do anything like that anyway and it's all in fun (I just want to see how I do compared to others on a defined course), but certainly it seems possible for a Prius to come with a full battery pack and finish with an empty battery pack and that savings won't show up in the fuel usage. Any thoughts?

But then again I guess that's the least of your worries, I'm still a bit worried how much you can trust filling the gas tank as a method to determine fuel used. 118mi is pretty short and I've easily squeezed .5-1gal between the click of the gas pump and full and am planning to use only 2 - 2.2 gallons on the course so the variance could be significant.

This fine, it's for fun anyway, just trying to see discussions on improvement. The best I've seen in similar competitions is installing a seperate fuel tank with more than enough for the course (so 3-5 gallons for our course) and the tank was graduated with markings and you could tell exactly how much fuel was used and still in it. But that require running a different fuel line and is a hassle and was only done for some really large and precise competitions I saw.

The other fun one, which I think someone else alluded to, was the Prius challenge, and they all used the standard MPG gauge (like built in scangauge) of the Prius as measurement which probably worked good. The one guy got over 140MPG.

Welcome to the event roster Chris.

A Ford Festiva? Cool! emoticon

I realize that you haven't read this entire thread, because if you did you'd have seen that our refill method will not be by how many clicks, etc. We will be filling them up to the rim. That pretty well evens things up for everyone.

Regarding the Prius drivers, we will get them to agree on a method to determine MPG's and use that method for them only. If they want to use their onboard MPG displays, that's fine with us.

Is there going to be a time limit to prevent overly slow driving ?
The Prius mileage is predicated on the use of the electric drive. That is why they get better mileage in the city than on the highway where they have to use the gasoline engine more.
I don't see why there should be any special rating other than a Hybrid class.

Mike, I saw you mention the new fill method but wasn't sure if you were serious :-).

Also seeing my name on the list reminds me, Troy, NY and probably no go karts but I may go there and hang out a bit.
