Here's the ABA testing on a Metro: http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=1074

Mostly people don't fully remove the alternator, but a good number install a switch to kill the field so it generates no output and then allow it to output at times of already decreased efficiency (like going up hill or what not).

I've never done it and having my share of alternator failures it certainly scares me. My commute is only 20 miles or so though. The idea of 2 1A 1'x3' solars on the roof with a charge controller intrigues me. I mean I drive 40 miles total per day and it can have 8 hours of charging in the sunny parking lot at work or maybe 2-3 hours at home when parked (before night time). That should be enough. Of course the need for a deep cycle, charge controller and an alternator for 'just in case' defeats the purpose. But it is intriguing.

Update on the B210 economizer engine project. What a day it was on Monday. I drove 1.5 hours up top of a mountain to Cobleskill to get the '74 B210 with the A13 in it. From the main road, it was a 2 mile ride into the woods at a friend's camp on a muddy, water hole filled, dirt pathway [can't quite call it a road]. I almost got my 2WD truck and trailer stuck - you get the picture. What a mess......we pressed on though.

The result? My co-worker was wrong, it's not a '74 but a '75 so it does not have the coveted [one year only] A13 engine. I got all excited for nothing. But when dealing with oddball and rare stuff, you've got to explore every possible lead.

But I have been successful in gathering up the other intake and cylinder head components I needed for this economy engine project from Datsun people in Arizona and New Hampshire. I have sourced a one year only "990" casting '80 Datsun 210 cylinder head which has the smaller round intake ports, as opposed to the larger oval ports the other 210's and B210's had. This head also has a smaller quench type combustion chamber - all good things for mileage.

To illustrate the amount of port size difference, here is the same head with the regular oval port shape traced out.

Smaller is better! emoticon

Economy Run II

Jud Engels [Clean mpg forums 2007 Toyota Prius - Cincinnati, KY] had something come up and will not be making it out for our event. That's too bad as he was one of the heavy hitter Prius drivers. I've already filled his spot though. I'd like to welcome Eric Hoefer who has signed up with his 2008 Honda Fit.

You're welcome Dave.

Update: We're down to just one Prius. I have edited the list to reflect this. "JPS000" - [2008 Toyota Prius] just contacted me to say he will be away on travel and won't be able to make it after all. Actually, I would have been surprised if people came from IN and KY for our event. That seemed a bit extreme to me.

The remaining Prius is from the Boston area and he will represent what the hybrids can do very nicely. His nickname is "Hobbit" and if you simply google the words "Hobbit" and "hypermiling" together, you'll see that Al is THE man in a Prius.

So there will only be one hybrid, but it will be one of the best in the country.

On the other hand, we gained one today so we're still at 18. I'd like to welcome Paul Marczak from Glenville in his '97 Honda Civic DX. Paul works for Morgan at Synapse Dyno in Scotia. Paul is another great example of a motor head who builds 450 hp turbo Hondas for a living, but at the same time is excited to participate in an economy run.

I told you racers dig this stuff. emoticon

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

Hey a question I just thought of. I probably won't use anything, but what would our rulings be on fuel additives?

I've tested quite a few and most don't seem to do anything, but sometimes I like to have something in there 'just in case'/for fun.

Usually we're talking something very small like 1-2oz/10Gal of fuel, but it could minisculy effect overall usage a bit. But then again if someone filled with pure gasoline (not sure if it's available anywhere, just saying) and everyone else had E10 then he'd have a slight advantage too.

Also I just found out the Festiva is a '93 and I'm getting it today hopefully, not a lot of time for tuning and improving, but I'm definately coming either way. I might come with a friend in one of his cars instead, he has a CRX HF and Civic VX but wants to bring the 1st gen RX7 to challenge himself, ha! If I can't get the Festy over 60MPG by then we'll probably bring that because it'll be more fun. See you there!

We're not NASA so we won't be testing fuels for additives. And frankly I can't think of anything that will help you over pure gasoline for mileage. If there is anything that would be that much better than gas, you'd have to recalibrate your fuel system to run it properly. You RPI guys really think outside the box. emoticon

Fairway Oil and Gas has 100% pure gasoline. It says so in the original post.

Hey Little Claude,

We welcome any type of hydrogen generator setup in this event. Nice to hear your experimenting with that. Let us know how you make out! Paul Hacker is claiming something like a 4 mpg increase on his Integra, but for some reason is not interested to enter our event.
