I have been contacted by an editor of "My Ford" magazine. She'd like to write an article on our event and hypermiling. She's hoping that there will more Fords signed up, but at the moment there are only two: Mr. Vedder's ZX2 and Chris Werner's Festiva.

People are starting to take notice of our very unique event. emoticon

Wow that's cool, a write up. My Festiva has a good chance of not making it too. It's just over a week away and I need to wait on my new rims and tires before I can get inspected, etc, etc, I'm way behind schedule as always.

As for pure gasoline, awesome! One of the main 'hidden techs' if you will that is always going around is about heating fuel/fuel vaporization and everyone says pure gas is much better. Too bad it's too far away for me to use and test with on a regular basis.

As for fuel additives, yeah you need to recalibrate your timing or fuel delivery, but it's pretty easy to make circuits to send out an augmented PWM to your injectors or to make a box to fake out your O2 a bit, search EFIE on google. Plus I have a MegaSquirt if I ever get around to using it. If we bring my friends RX7 you'll all get a nice showing and telling of it's cabalities. We're mainly going to be tuning, improving his install and showcasing the tech.

Lastly, bring the HHO! I've been strongly thinking about hydrogen production and would love to see something in operation. Do you have an EFIE or way to lean out your gasoline?

EDIT: I'm really excited about this event, I try every week to work on various techniques or aero improvments to maximize my milage and this gives and extra drive for that. We should keep it up and have one in the winter, see who can get the best MPG with nobby studded tires in white out conditions :-).

I admire your enthusiam Chris! I too, am really caught up in this stuff. I think it's a great new challenge.

You know, just like hot rodding a car to go faster, there are endless amounts of things that can be done for better mileage. Believe me, I have so many things I'd like to try and so little time to get to them.

My B210 will not have the full-monte fuel miser combination ready for next Sunday. I have run out of time and will have to use the "big" engine in it right now. It will still be fun, but whatever it can muster for mpg, will only be the beginning of what is to come.....

Trust me! emoticon

I went onto YouTube's site and typed "Economy Run" into the search box. Holy cow I hit the jackpot! There are old school film clips like THIS and then modern stuff as well. Check it out.

Are we going to have a marching band playing for us too, as we enter the finish area? emoticon

Happy viewing!

Wouldn't it be something if our event grew like that.
I wonder what mileage they got. Back then 20 mpg was considered good, like 30 today.

Mike you should get out there driving a bit too, techniques can add up to 50-100% to your MPG!

Depending on people behind me, for fun county 55mph road I'm thinking about pulse and glide from 40-60MPH, P&G has been shown to fairly regularly add 30-50% depending on conditions.

I practice every day while commuting. I have a nice congestion free ride to work. I P&G every day. emoticon

B210 update: 9/27/08

Test drove the B210 with the "big" engine and stock carb. It runs terribly. Way too lean! No power. The Crane cam in that engine is too big also. Complete waste of time trying to detune my hot rod 1608. Out of desperation I dug my spare [read that junk] '76 1400cc Honeybee engine out and did a leakdown test. Failed miserably, valves leaking like crazy [from sitting for 15 years outside before I got it]. So I took the head off and am readying my small port head for it. It will be a lot of work this week to get it together and swapped in. But that's the plan.

Heavy flywheel?

Can anyone here tell me if a heavier flywheel would be advantageous for economy?

What's better in this case light or heavy?

I think light is good for economy. The Honda vx is a special high mpg car, and has a lighter flywheel than a standard Civic. The car would weigh slightly less. I plus it is easier to keep spinning. I think the car manufactures make the flyweel heavy so the car is easy to smoothly get off the line.

Honda's high mpg cars always had lighter than usual flywheels.
