Mike, I'm sure pinging/detonation is not conducive to good mileage. We used to advance the timing until it rattled a little under full throttle a low rpms.
Setting the timing like that might not be the best for an economy run. Full throttle at low RPMS would result in little vacuum. Mike will be below 3000 RPM and very high vacuum. The vacuum advance will be fully engaged.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Good points on the ignition timing Richard and Mark, thank you. I'm going to try to get some road test time in before Sunday and advance it as much as possible without detonation.

Are you going all out in replacing wheel brng grease with oil. Lighter oil in the transmission and differential, back the brakes off a notch ?
For this event I will stay doing things on the cheap and will be running 5W20 regular motor oil. The 0W-20 is like $8.00 a quart. I doubt that the mileage gained would outweigh the extra expense. But when I get more serious in the future I will go that route. I will back off the rear shoes a few clicks, but the wheel bearing grease will stay in for now.
As I mentioned earlier, Sunday's event will not be my best effort. I have not had enough time to prepare. The car would need to be lowered, aero work, lightening, etc. I don't want to do those things to my '77 B210.
So today I came up with a better plan to continue this developement in the future. I feel it will be best to use a dedicated car for this. And I have just the car for it.
My '81 Datsun 210 was supposed to be a rally car. I've owned it for over 10 years and never really got much done on it. I say bag the rally deal, that's way too expensive anyway. Other than having a full cage installed years ago [mistake], the car is fully intact. I will cut the cage out and then transform it into a serious gas mileage machine. But that's next year. Right now I've got to push the B210 to it's limits this Sunday.
I have contacted the Yahoo Datsun 210/B210 forum members and informed them that I plan to set a record for the highest mpg ever recorded for a B210 or 210 car. Of course there is no such record to date, but I am starting one right here and now and I've thrown out the gauntlet to all other Datsun B210 or 210 owners.
Lets roll!

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Mike,
Why stop at the Datsun B210 record and go for the best Carburated Gas mileage of any car and put it in Guinness World Records. They probablly have a catagory.
The new ramps work much better than before to weigh cars, longer approuch and made of steel grating. They will still have to be moved for each car.
We have a time slot of 1:00p to 3:00p at the gokart track for racing. The plan is to get there and order food, race then eat. There is birthday party at 3:00p so it will be a little tight. Don will have a Prime Rib special and a Pasta special. We don't have to leave at 3:00p, it will be a little noisey after that.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Thanks for building the new ramps Bryon. The plans for lunch and go-kart racing sound fine to me.
Your and Dave's efforts are much appreciated.
See you Sunday morning!

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
That's awesome. Yeah I think we're definately bringing the RX7 instead. He wants to do the same thing, see if he can get the best rotary MPG ever! Of course I doubt there's any such record so far anyway and his custom 12A build is being built specifically for this task, but it'll still be fun to tune and see. I just filled the Festiva and got over 47MPG on a donut with a bad ignition issue, so that'll give you guys a run for your money whenever the next one is but for now I don't feel like it's ready.

That's fine Chris, but I was hoping to see the Festiva have a go. I like the really small cars.
What year's the RX-7?

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Get a good look at the shiny header paint now, because as soon as I start the engine, well you know what happens after that.
The big engine comes out, the little one goes in....
Here's where I am this morning. Tomorrow is test and tune day.
In the past I've never liked the non crossflow type cylinder head arrangement on these engines because the exhaust heats up the intake manifold and costs power. But for fuel efficiency, it's perfect. Cook that intake!

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
A new theory has come to my attention. I am going to try it out today or tomorrow.
If it works you will find out Sunday morning.
