I have been really curious about the difference ambient temperatures make.
Warm air makes for leaner A/F ratios but cooler air makes for more power, hence less throttle opening, meaning less fuel.
Of course there are other factors, such as rolling resistance etc.
I wonder if the perceived difference is more due to longer warm up times, heavier loads on the charging system, heater, headlights and related things.
Just curious.

A nice article covering our economy run.
Wonder if it will bring any spectators.

Hey that's great news Richard.

Here's a link to it.

I don't think I would have mentioned using 90 psi in the tires. No one really used anything even close to that much pressure anyway and the safety nannys might have a holiday with that one. emoticon

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

I had to reacquaint myself with the inner workings of a Hitachi downdraft carburetor this morning. I'm sure glad I had the presence of mind to buy that $10.00 B210 carb overhaul kit on ebay over the summer. It's so important at time like this to have the parts you need. I replaced the standard 105 main jet with a 109. It is pretty much spot on now, with a 14.6 to 15.0 A/F range at cruise.

The last issue is the pinging. Holy cow I never saw such pinging. I have to run less than the standard 10 degrees of timing and there's still some detonation - and this is on 93 Premium!

Obviously the high compression end of this combination is showing itself. Luckily I have some 110 octane race gas here [$7.40 a gallon]. I'm going to need it. The cost per mile class winner? Definately not me! emoticon

Mike, you're so quick to refresh an engine and have pinging, sounds the perfect man to try Sommendar's Grooves. I've yet to see distinct before and after improvements, etc, but one guy on mpgresearch swears by it. Puts it in for power, turns up the advance and makes some killer engines.

As for ducting, clother dryer vent works pretty good for ducting around too. Or just standard heat riser automotive tube from NAPA.

ZX2: as for cold vs. hot, my statements were spefically about engine off coasting down a hill, so I'm talking just changes to coasting, both less pressure in the tires (due to temp) and more resistance. Engine is off and I'm not even talking gas usage.

As for your points though, less throttle openning isn't less fuel, I guess with a carb that's true, but if you were really tuning the carb to the environment you'd be changing it to put out more fuel as the denser air moves over it. Plus more throttle openning is good, less pumping losses. But you would have less rpm and less internal resistance with more power at lower rpms/denser air. Really hard to tell.

See you all tomorrow!

Chris,

You got me on the Sommendar's Grooves. I have no clue what that is. Niether does Google:

"Your search - Sommendar's Grooves - did not match any documents."

But I'd still like to know! emoticon

I just got back from a 64 mile test loop in the B210. Preliminary results were very inspiring.

I've still got a few hours before bed time. I will be breaking out the cardboard and duct tape.

See you all in the am.

Oh, by the way I didn't realize it until today but Fairway Oil has a pump that contains 100 octane low lead aviation fuel right there on the premises. I will be using that for top up tomorrow morning. emoticon

Hi Mike, Its possible if the engine doesn't have an EGR now thats why it pings.

Mike I can never spell that guys name, I'm suprised google had no suggestions though. Here's the most recent thread about it on gassavers: http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=8322
Here's the guys actual site (warning it's bad engrish and you'll think he's crazy): http://somender-singh.com/
I guess I mean Somender.
Here's a good forum that advocates them: http://www.mpgresearch.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=48

Finally: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=66779
Lots of good pics and theory there, 'AutomotiveBreathe' is the guy I was talking about, you can just around and just read his posts sounds like he has lots of years of experience.

Thanks to the Mike and the guys at the AMEC for putting on the Economy Run. It was the first big trip out for my Met in the five years since it was done and it was great. I'll start driving it more. I thought the event was well orgaanized, the route was great, the weather was great, the leaf peeping was great and it was fun seeing the different attacks people had taken on improving their mileage. I posted a few of my snapshots at the link below.
A Great Day
