Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

Bill, it was great meeting you today and seeing your beautiful Metropolitan in person. Also thanks very much for taking the pictures and then sharing them with us!

I have not ever used Webshots before and tried to save the pics to my computer. I signed up for a free account with them, but strangely enough they won't let you save any of their site's pics. Have you ever used Photobucket? It is a free photo site as well but has none of the restrictions and anyone can copy and paste pics from there.

Any chance you could post them there ? [if you have time of course].

Cheers,

Mike

I mentioned this question to Mike today, though I came up with it a little late. I thought I'd throw out it out as an afterthought anyway -

Of the drivers today, how many are engineers/scientists/otherwise techie? I'm an electrical engineer by day. I'm guessing people tuning their engines while driving qualify; people with analog voltmeters and unmarked LEDs on their dashboards qualify.

It seems that an economy run like this is an outstanding example of the engineer's basic instinct to optimize things as much as possible.

Thanks to Dave, Mike, Bryon, and everyone else who worked to set up this event. I had a great time trying a new (to me) kind of performance driving with my car.

Outstanding thanks Bill!

Official results will be up as soon as Bryon sends the excel file to Mark Long.

Today's event was excellent and the people we met were terrific. The record book got pounded. The TDI's cleaned house at over 70 mpg!

Stay tuned, lot's of pics and recap on the way. I'm dead tired tonight. I was up to 1:30am with the carboard, duct tape, and plexiglass last night!

The results for both the Summer and Fall Economy runs are posted on our results page.

 Wow the competition was stiff!
The average MPG was 49.56.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

The Fall Foliage economy run was very enlightening! The weather was perfect the people really interesting and the results almost hard to believe. It does show (in my opinion) that for regular over the road driving that diesels are the way to go. They can carry lots of weight, can keep up with traffic have all the normal amenities you would want like AC, heat, power windows, etc and can get outstanding mileage (all were in the 58 to 72 mpg range).

The carbureted cars did remarkably well but were all stripped down featherweights with no regular (luxury) items installed.

The other thing that I take from this is that a hybrid is a really good car also and if we had run this event in the city with stop and go traffic it would have kicked everyone’s butts! These cars are extremely environmentally friendly also which for a lot of people is really important and should be for all of us. I am actually amazed the hybrid did as well as it did considering the open flowing beautiful roads we were on. Hybrids really shine in the city.

I was extremely happy to see how serious everyone took the event and how well they all did. If all the citizens of the USA drove like we did we could put off running out of oil for a long time. That would give us the time to get the alternate sources of energy or technology up and running.

Dave Burnham
PS I would like to thank Bryon and Mike for working together on this it was fun and good people make good events happen!

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge

In had a great time running this event and then doing some serious racing at the gokart track. I will redo the Excel program for the next time so each catagory will have its own page so it will be easier to read the winners.

I have a route for the next economy run in mind. It is all back roads through the Adirondacks but a little less challanging. It will have less hills and be a little longer so it could take more of the day. My idea is to get the most mpg out of all cars possible. If anybody has any other ideas, chime in. I know most people do not want a totally flat a boring course.

I would like to drive the next Ecomomy Run so I would like someone to take over weighing and timing cars.

Bryon, I am all for having additional future events like this. We'll get someone to take over the weighing and timing the cars. The new course you are thinking about sounds great! I'd like to hit 70 mpg next time out. Yes, it can be done with nothing more than gasoline and a carburetor!

Speaking of elevation. Tom Moeller [Mazda Miata] sent me this awesome graph of the elevations he recorded during our event yesterday. Thanks Tom!

Tom,

Welcome to our message boards! I remember you asking me that question and I asked it outloud at the awards luncheon. The answer was that other than yourself, Hobbit, and our Bryon Seyfried, the rest of us [as it was said in notorious A.M.E.C. humor] are just your typical "dumb-ass mechanics!" emoticon

I can't wait for the next one either. Sorry we brought down your average a bit, but we had a blast on the drive and tuning the car a bit more. Next time we'll be more competitve. Greg has both a CRX HF and a Civic VX, either would do quite awesome, but we brought the RX7 for fun and because it needed tuning.

As for hills, I kind of really liked that long hill after we hit Rt 30. If I had my car my engine would have been off the whole time. I think longer is better though, to take out some variance with the filling, which I still think isn't quite as exact as is really needed for stiff competition. But definatley keep the elevation changes.
