Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Car & Driver magazine did a test on how different things affect mileage. AC uses more gas than windows open. When coasting to a stop, don't shift into neutral. That 100 lbs of stuff in the trunk will decrease your mileage by nearly 2%. Here is the intersting one. Tire pressure, 5psi. lower than reccomended, 3% loss. 5psi higher at 55mph.
0.0% increase.
They did some others, mostly aerodynamic such as roof racks and convertables.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
I'm glad my initals aren't E P A, nor C and D.
A/C uses more fuel than windows open, or A/C uses less fuel than windows open. It depends on the air speed (road speed combined with any wind and direction vector).
Coasting in neutral uses more fuel, or coasting in neutral uses less fuel. It depends on the deceleration rate of engine braking and distance to be covered.
There are just too many other variables, notably speed and distance, in determining the best distance per fuel volume usage rate to issue blanket statements.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
And our friend Lug Nut ought to know.... he set top mpg of our event a 71 in his TDI Passat.
My taller 3.54 differential came in today from Idaho, and Mark Long's got some 155/80R13's for me. I am looking forward to stepping up my game next year, and should not have to worry about being nipped by any [ringer] carbureted Rabbits this time. I still think it was a fluke.......and will be adding a tamper proof seals to any exposed fuel sending units in the future too.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Some here may have slipped into complacency regarding fuel economy due to current low fuel costs. I'm still interested though.
Check out this well written article on maintaining your best possible fuel economy in winter conditions HERE.
There are some very interesting points made and winter tires are highly encouraged as well.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II and Go-Kart Challenge
Awesome Mike. I know you guys are all ramped up for your end of season dinner, but I was just checking in to make sure you still had these priorities in mind too :-).
As for ZX2's post there's way too much involved to answer those questions and compare to their testing methods. Certianly my costing down in neutral with engine OFF is saving gas. I'm sure they were just trying to suprise people that didn't know about DFCO.
Mike, I've been driving my Festiva almost everyday since the last event even with current fuel prices. I was averaging just about 50MPG in the fall, but winter is more like 43-44MPG (of course that's studded tires too ). So can't wait to put back on the summer tires and see what spring/summer brings.
I would love to run 155/80R13s on mine myself, that'd be a 7.8% increase over my 165/70R12 stockers, but I need to find 13" rims in the fairly elusive 4x4.5" 4 lug pattern :-(. I've been looking for the past 6 months. For now I think I'll just put the 12s back on because I'm pretty cheap and it's not worth the $40-50 per RIM I'm seeing for these wheels.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II
Good to hear from you Chris,
I too, have been thinking about getting the B210 out now that the salt is off of the roads.... and the thought of a late Spring Economy Run III has also entered my mind. I've got my higher 3.54 diff now and also have been squirreling away some well used 155/80R13 tires in the ongoing search to top my personal best mark of 61.5 mpg.
Regarding winter tires, it is now crystal clear to me that they are huge fuel wasters. My Protege picked up almost 2 mpg after removing my Hakka 1's in mid February. I drive the same route to work every day and use the same hills to coast down from. With the aggressive and soft treaded winter tires my car's ability to coast is greatly diminished. I mean it is very obvious.
Regarding your 4.5 inch bolt pattern wheels, is that the same a the 4 x 114.3 pattern? If so, those are easy to find.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II
I found another gas station today that sells 100% pure gasoline without the dreaded 10% ethanol added. It is called the Pit Stop Service Center and it is on Route 30 in Schoharie Twsp. Regular was $2.13 a gallon today. Just as with Fairway gas and oil in Fonda, 100% gasoline costs about 10 cents more a gallon and is well worth it.
There is an article HERE about them also offering bio-diesel at their pumps as well.

I see about 10% drop in the cold weather in my Outback wagon. Daily commute is about 7 miles each way, all flat; winter mileage is 18-20, summer is 20-24. This is with the same all-season tires, same roads, just changing between winter/summer gas blend. And cold grease temperatures in an always-engaged all-wheel-drive car.

Re: AMEC Economy Run II
Tom,
Good to hear from you. Thanks for chiming in with your winter season mileage findings. If we do another economy run this spring/summer would you like to join in again?
