Tom,

Good to hear from you. Thanks for chiming in with your winter season mileage findings. If we do another economy run this spring/summer would you like to join in again?

Oh yes. As long as it's during the 6 months that the Miata is out of the barn at the fairgrounds (and there isn't something else scheduled) I'm in. Autocrossing tends to be on Sundays, so if the world actually revolved around me, I'd have the economy run on a Saturday. emoticon

I tried to make it to Lake George to spectate at the races last month, but (big surprise) something else was already planned for me that weekend.

Regarding your 4.5 inch bolt pattern wheels, is that the same a the 4 x 114.3 pattern? If so, those are easy to find.

Yup, same thing. I can find them but usually 14"s from an Accent, I've had a lot of trouble finding regular steel 13" wheels. On eBay Metro or RX7 rims are $30-40 a piece, sometimes I can find cheap sets of nice aftermarket wheels but they always have too huge an offset and rub my suspension. Plus I was always a little worried about having to make a hub adapter for my hubcentric car to take the others.

Maybe I'm just checking the wrong places, papers seem to never have anything, craigslist very little and far away and want ad always has 20" rims, blah blah. I called a few junk yards and they all said no, I think they dumped a lot of their stock last summer. On that same line what are some good junkyards up more in the adirondacks by you guys?

Finally a few weeks back I found a guy way down in Danbury, CT that said he had actual 13" Festiva rims and I thought, awesome.

We I got there they were 12s emoticon. Which is fine, I now will probably just stick with my 12s since they had good tread, just was hoping to oversize a bit.

Did anyone know that if you measure the actual diameter of a rim with a ruler it is 1" wider than spec? I never knew this, these clearly were my same rims and had R12s, but measured 13". So we measured the R16 rims on his Subaru and it measure 17.1". I just never knew that, what a wasteful trip.

AMEC Economy Run III

You read right, I am working with Mark Long to organize our third Economy Run event slated for this summer. Hopefully Bryon Seyfried will come aboard as well. I sent out a note to my Economy Run email list to gauge interest from past participants and got a really encouraging responce. I will be discussing this with the club at the April meeting coming up on April 13th.

If you'd like to be added to my Economy Run email list simply send me a note at mikek ( at) icerace (dot ) com.

Re: AMEC Economy Run thread

I was alerted about another northeastern economy run type of event by Jonathan Bartlett [our Economy Run II winner]. The event he sent me a link to is here: http://www.eevc.info/index.html

It was a NJ based event but has been moved to PA for this coming April 17th - 19th. It is put on by the Eastern Electric Vehicle Club. This is a unique and comprehensive test and an explanation of it is located HERE along with full results. They not only measured economy, but also accelleration, braking, autocross[?], and also incoporated a road rally as well!

Although they list a class called "Gasoline Cars, Trucks, and SUVs", I couldn't find any results for that class on the results page link above. I guess no one entered. Pity I didn't know about it last year or I'd have given it a go in my B210.

Re: AMEC Economy Run thread

Here's one I almost overlooked. I just stumbled upon another northeastern "economy run" type of event being put on by the Glen Region SCCA: the Green Grand Prix Fuel Economy Competition set for Saturday May 2nd.

What's interesting is that they are having two events at the same time on the same day. One is an SCCA road rally, which consists of an 80 mile loop around Seneca Lake. The other is the aforementioned Fuel Economy contest [using the same 80 mile loop]. You choose which one you want to run in.

I am seriously thinking about entering the fuel economy contest with the B210. Another perk for me is that there is a $1,000 enduro the night before right there at Black Rock Speedway. I can spectate at the enduro on Friday night and then run in the Glen Region event the next morning [which starts where I'll be staying] at the Glen Motor Inn!

Nice!

Hobbit was at the Green Grand Prix a couple of times. Check out his Pictures from the 2007 event.

One guy brought an Isuzu trooper powered by wood chips!

Yes, he really runs it on wood chips, cooking them down to produce "wood gas" on the fly.

Wow that looks like a fun event, it's amazing the type of cars and hype it has, lots of demonstrations.

Looking at results last year, lots of 45-50MPGs. Unless this thing is all up hill those numbers seem really low. I haven't gotten lower than 43MPG in my daily commuter and that's with 5F temps and studded tires. I'd love to show those Cornell kids what a stock commuter from '93 could do, but dang that's a long drive!

They start out at 8am but I really couldn't afford to not spend the night at home so I'd have to leave just after 4am to get there, plus a $50 entry to boot.

Keep up informed if you go though, I'd be very curious what they'll say about your carbed car and how surprised they'll be when you win :-).

The final tally from this past weekend's event at Penn State isn't officially posted, but it looks like the three highest liquid fueled (as opposed to all-electric) efficiency numbers will be somewhere around 50 mpg for third and a neck-and-neck between second and first in the 67 to 70 mpg range.

Thanks for the follow up Jonathan. Were you in the competition? We know that your Passat wagon is more than capable of 70 mpg.
