Still waiting for the "official" rankings, but yes, I'm one of the two at over 65 mpg.
The hills for this course were insane, not the one gradual up and descend as the Adirondac course, but a series of steep climbs and drops with hairpin turns and little chance to gather momentum.

Fuel Economy Contest this Saturday......

Image

I'm wondering if anyone else here is considering participating in next Saturday's Green Grand Prix Fuel Economy Competition?

- All vehicles invited
- 10 classes of prizes based on EPA mpg ratings.
- Starts at 9:20 A.M. from the Glen Motor Inn, 1 mile North of Watkins Glen on Rte. 14
- Circles Seneca Lake on major roads with a mandatory 10 minute stop at the - Geneva Chamber of Commerce.
- $50 entry fee includes insurance cost , 2 lunches and 2 commemorative T-Shirts

There's also a road rally running the same 80 mile course around Seneca Lake 1 hour later.

Anyone else going?

I'm considering it, but haven't decided yet.

I got an e-mail today with the "official" volume of fuel I used for the 79.4 mile course used: 1.175 gallons or 67.6 mpg.

Green Grand Prix

I hope you can make it Jonathan.

I've installed the tallest final drive Datsun had available for my car, filled it with synthetic oil, mounted 4 155/80R13's, and will lower the suspension as well. I bought 100% pure gasoline and will be using it in the contest.

Here are a few interesting details about this event:

Cars will be released from the Glen Motor Inn 1 per minute . You may travel 10% slower than the posted speed limit, but any slower than that, you will be penalized. We have timed the course.

You should have 2 people aboard. If you have only one person, you should be carrying 120 pounds of ballast.

I'm not crazy about the extra 120 lbs. that's for sure. Why would you need two people in the car for an economy run? My wife's less than 120 lbs. but she doesn't want to go. Anyone light weight out there want to go for an 80 mile ride this Saturday? Maybe I can borrow a manikin? Image

Also, I'm told that there are a few long and steep hills on the course. I'm not expecting numbers as good as we had in our event out of Fonda, especially with the silly ballast aboard, but we'll see.

I'm nuts, but I'm in.
Work a full day Friday, go out with friends in the evening as we do the first Friday each month, 6 1/2 hour drive to Watkins Glen, arrive 7:30 am.
Where's the smiley with two closed eyes?

120 lbs of ballast? That's 15 gallons of water that, ummmm, ...'leaks' out during the run...

Wow I'm impressed Jonathan. That's a whole lotta effort to make the event! It will be worth it for you. My money is on you!

I've been watching the forecast and it doesn't look good for me. You see, I don't drive my 32 year old classic Japanese car in the rain. I'm really bummed, because it's been clear and sunny for what like the last 10 days straight? The weather for Watkins Glen tomorrow [Friday] looks like this:

Image
Chance of T-storms
60% chance of precipitation

Saturday's forecast is for lingering showers in the morning and clearing up just about the time the event would be over.

I'd would have been driving out on Friday night so I am reluctantly bagging it. Huge disappointment because these events are so rare!

I haven't heard from Jonathan [Lug Nut] yet, to see how he fared, but from everything I'm reading, the Green Grand Prix was a terrific event.

Image For most people, the most interesting car was probably the home made, wood bodied, streamlined diesel powered trike which is an automotive X-Prize entry.

Image
They managed 89.5 mpg on the 77 mile circuit.

Yes it did rain on Friday and all Friday night, [that's why I didn't go] but Saturday's weather was perfect. I certainly missed a great time. Check out the pics and story HERE.

That reminds me of the wooden ice racer.

Re: AMEC Economy Run thread

Their tow vehicle broke down just outside Albany. They took the trike off the trailer, drove through the night and rain the rest of the way to the competition. Only a few hours shakedown before this trip, no wipers, one headlight out. I followed them when they departed back towards Albany where they were to meet the rest of their team and the repaired tow car.

Several competitors were talking before the awards about the likelihood that the fuel pump accuracy was suspect.

Here's a quote lifted from the EcoModder site in the link above:
"At the end, there was of course discussion about the accuracy of the short fills (SG numbers were lower for everyone I talked to, not counting Prius drivers) - thinking we were seeing the effects of fuel expansion during the drive (cool overnight, fuel heating up during the drive)."

My results were not recognized at the event awards ceremony. I don't know why that was.
I have my numbers from my refueling slip and confirmed that against their number as they calculated on their official score sheet, so unless I was disqualified for some reason and was not informed of that, I can't explain why I was shut out.

Maybe their software just couldn't deal with a three digit number....

I got this when I asked about my result:
"We got a figure that seemed unreasonable.
The number that was turned in to me was 108.298 mpg. pretty remarkable and questionable."

Thanks Jonathan,

Yes over on Ecomodder I heard they used the "first click off" method of refilling. We experienced first hand how inacurrate that worked out at our first event last summer.

I am trying to put together a list of cars that can be damaged by overfilling the fuel tanks. So far the Toyota/Lexus cars are the only ones I am aware of. Seems like practically every model too from Corollas to the RX330 SUV's. Must be their evaporative system design and layout. Their vapor canisters get raw fuel in them when topped up to far.
