Re: AMEC Economy Run thread
I once took a long trip down and back to Florida with my father in a 1980’s Plymouth Horizon. We swapped as drivers every tank full. I consistently got 4 MPG better than my father and we were on route 95 all the way to Florida. It wasn't the hills or type of road it was all his on and off the gas pedal even when it was flat straight road and his weaving all over the road. I couldn’t sleep on the trip I was too nervous we would crash I had to keep one eye open all the time while on the road!

On your 40 MPG run to NJ, how much hypermiling did you do? Where you in the way of other drivers?
I averaged between 60 and 65 mph and only coasted down some of the longer downhill grades. It was Sunday so there weren't any trucks to use for drafting. Once in NJ it is basically flat and that helps mileage too. The Garden State Parkway's pavement is very smooth as well. I didn't really hold anyone up as there was always a passing lane. Surprisingly, many people in the right lane stay around 65 as well. It's funny because after all these years of being the passer, I am now the passee. quote: Mark Long wrote:My Wife gets 10-15 percent worse mileage than I do even though my average speed is a bit higher.
Most people on the road never give how they drive a thought. I am so used to driving to save fuel now that it is second nature. I don't even have to think about it any more. I automatically time lights, read the terrain for hills and decents, etc.
My nephew is 16 and just got his permit. He's all about power and speed right now [like I used to be at his age]. I've been explaining the art of hypermiling and saving fuel to him this weekend. He just laughs. He asked me if I ever even floored my Protege? I laughed and said yes, but only twice since I've owned it. It's only got 105 h.p. so what's the point?
My wife and my son always tend to run late for things and as a result are usually in a hurry. When I drive they tell me: "C'mon lets go already!" My wife said after all these years she never thought she'd see the day I drove slowly.

That's a funny story Dave. It just goes to show that we racers know how to drive fast when we want to, but also know how to use our driving skills in other ways as well. It takes just a much skill to drive for best mileage, as it does to turn the lowest lap time.

AMEC Economy Run III
I sent the note below out to the 19 persons on my Economy Run email list. If you'd like to be added to the list send me your email address via a pm on this board [or call me at (518) 674-0520].
Hello A.M.E.C. Economy Run participants past and present,
Mark Long and I are preparing to bring you another of our fine Economy Run events based out of Fonda, NY. We have decided to stick with what we consider to be a terrific route, the 118.7 mile route, last used on October 5th, in Economy Run II. It will also allow those of us who are further developing our cars to gauge our improvements from last year.
The only change to our event will be the deletion of the Ton-Mile category, and with it the weighing of every car prior to the event. We don't feel it is worth the effort and our time would be better spent sending the cars off while their engines are still up to operating temperature.
The only thing left to do is pick a date. It will be on a Sunday morning as last year. What we are doing here is giving you all a chance to let us know what weekends are no good for you due to other commitments. At this point we are considering these dates:
July 19th
July 26th
August 2nd
August 23rd
Please vote for the date[s] that work best for you. Please forward this to your car friends and anyone that you think might be interested.
P.S. We will be discussing possibly holding this event in conjunction with our club's summer picnic again at Monday night's meeting.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III
There's a whole nother group of EconoRun people out there - they held a run during the Americade this past week, in Lake George.
http://www.tourexpo.com/data/content/view/1507/1/
I've got a report from the Glens Falls weekly paper The Chronicle, which I'll type some sections of here -
quote: Gas mileages ranging from 44 up to 84.911 miles per gallon were achieved in the inaugural Americade Fuel Economy Run on Tuesday, June 2. Eleven bikes made the run, and "we hope the event will grow in the future," said Americade founder and director Bill Dutcher. Gene Jackey of Schenectady achieved the top mileage figure. His 2007 Yamaha Virago 250 burned 1.299 gallons on the event's 110.3-mile course, competing in the unlimited category.
Winners in each category received a trophy and a case of Spectro Oil motor oil. The American Motorcyclist Association was also a sponsor.
The run began at Jolley's Mobil near Northway exit 20 on Route 9 in Queensbury, went up the Northway to a checkpoint at Exit 30, then took the Northway back down to Jolley's Mobil.
Event rules noted that the minimum speed on the Northway is 55mph.
I just tried using Google Maps, and my desktop GPS program Mapsource, to get an elevation plot, but couldn't do it without driving the course myself. I think the northway route is probably a lot flatter than our loop to Speculator and back.

Re: AMEC Economy Run thread
That's really cool Tom,
Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea that such an event was taking place at Americade. I'll bet Ernie would have gone with his Ninja 250 if he knew beforehand. I'll bet he could have given the top dog a run for his money too!

Re: AMEC Economy Run thread
I'm sure that link will be taken down at some point so I cut and pasted the ad below to save the event info to this thread.
Americade Motorcycle Fuel Economy Run
Got an easy throttle hand? Get good mileage?
Find out how good on Tuesday at 10am, and maybe win a trophy at the same time.
Americade is introducing its first-ever Fuel Economy Run, which given the country's focus on economy, will likely get more than its share of press coverage.
We've set up a simple 100 mile route involving mostly interstate road. Tanks will be topped up and sealed, and the bikes will depart at set intervals. There will be a maximum time allowed, to ensure that all are operated just below the speed limit. Riders will check in at the turnaround, and tanks will be carefully refilled at the finish (in the Lake George area.)
Unique Americade trophies to class winners, and hundreds of $$ in door prizes from sponsor, Spectro Oils. Entry forms available at the Activities Room at Roaring Brook Ranch.
3 Classes:
Stock Touring Motorcycle - Solo
Bike must appear to be stock, have saddlebags and windshield, but no limits on tire pressure.
Stock Touring Motorcycle - Passenger
Bike must be stock-appearing, have saddlebags, windshield, and passenger, but no limits on tire pressure.
Unlimited (any cc size, no limits on configuration) - additional $100 cash prize for anyone who can exceed 100 mpg.
Let's show the world how fuel-efficient a motorcycle can be.
When: Tuesday 10am
Sponsor: Spectro Oils

Actually Ernie's Ninja 250 just barely outdid their Ninja 250. His Spring 2008 run got 73.06mpg, and this one (on nearly level Northway) got 71.253 - that's pretty close!

Re: AMEC Economy Run thread
Thank you Tom,
That was very interesting. A BMW 1200 LT won the "Stock Touring with Passenger on board" class? Wow, that bike's over 900 lbs. before anyone even gets on it!
My '72 Datsun 1200 single groove crank pulley came in from Nissan today. It will replace the heavy three groove unit currently on my B210. Can you believe Nissan still has parts available for 37 year old cars? Gotta love it.
....I keep chipping away at it little by little. I'll be using a 13 lb. gel cell battery from a BMW 1200 RT. Can you tell I'm aiming even higher this time? I'd like to top everything with four wheels that is burning gasoline this year, and give the diesels all they can handle as well.

So what are you washing the front of the car with - Teflon, graphite dust, or spray-on non-stick Pam cooking spray (I hear butter flavor is good for 2hp)? Any rules about adding solid rocket boosters? They don't deplete the gas tank.
