I'm considering trying this year's run with the Miata top down, to see if there's a difference. I expect there's more drag from having a windshield sticking up alone, than there is from the lumpy soft top. I could get a factory tonneau from ebay as part of the experiment.

If I could find more free 4-hour blocks of time, I'd do some solo testing to see what the difference is. I'm not planning on removing the windshield though. If I did that, I'd also have to borrow a drivers' seat from a Civic, so my eyes were level with the windowsill. And put my baseball cap on backwards.

AMEC Economy Run III August 23, 2009

Image

Here are the details for Economy Run III:

What: Fuel mileage contest through the southern Adirondacks of NY. The route will be on really nice scenic and challenging roads and will run approx. 94 miles in distance. Your “economic” driving ability will be tested. Cars will be filled with fuel by an AMEC official and be sent off at one minute intervals. There will be a time limit to complete the run. Any street legal vehicle is allowed to participate, [including motorcycles]. This event will run rain or shine.

Where: The starting spot will be at the [ethanol free] Fairway Oil gas station on Route 5 in Fonda, NY. The physical address is 40 E Main St, Fonda, NY 12068. Take NY Thruway Exit 28.Take NY Thruway Exit 28. After the toll booth, turn left onto Riverside Drive. Then turn right onto South Bridge Street and go over the bridge. On the other side of the bridge is a traffic light. You can see Fairway Oil and Gas on your left. Turn left onto Route 5 and enter the station.

When: Sunday, August 23rd, 2009. Arrival time will be 8:00-8:30am, first car off at 9:00am. They have gas and diesel and have a large enough parking lot that we won’t be in the way.

Cost: $10 per vehicle plus $8 per car for lunch at awards [see "Awards" below]

Awards include:

1. Best overall mpg for gas cars [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places]

2. Best overall mpg for diesel and hybrid cars [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places]

3. Best Historic car ['79 and earlier - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places].

4. Best overall mpg for motorcycles/scooters [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places].

Finish: will be at Mayfield Mobil, 2460 State Highway 30 Mayfield, NY 12117. They are 8.4 miles south of Northville, and their lot is plenty big. It will be on your right as you're heading on Route 30 south.

Awards and Lunch: This event will conclude about noon, and we will be having our A.M.E.C. summer picnic immediately following the event. All Economy run participants are invited to join us for awards and a picnic lunch at Northampton Beach Campground located on Housmann Street, in Mayfield, [it's actually closer to Northville] NY. Their website is HERE. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the map links. The picnic pavilion and beach are right on the shore of beautiful Sacandaga lake. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and soda will be served. This park is 8 miles north on route 30 from the Mobil station where the event concluded.

To register for this event: Please contact Mike Kamm at (518) 674-0520 or via email: mikek [at ]icerace [ dot] com. Or just simply reply to this thread with your name, year/model car.

You can put me on the list, 91 VW Jetta Eco Diesel. I probably won't do much to the car except put air in the tires but I am going to the picnic and the drive in the Adirondacks is fun. Plus I want to try and beat my 58 MPG from last time.

No problem, thanks Dave.

We've just had another distinguished guest sign up as well. Ben Jones of Ecomodder will be bringing his 1991 Honda CRX from Hanover, NH.

Ben [SVOboy on Ecomodder] said he will have some "wicked aeromods" on his CRX for this event. Keep in mind that he's regularly logging over 61 mpg before the planned areo mods. So it will be really exciting to see what Ben's CRX can do at our event.

Ben started Ecomodder with his friend Darin Cosgrove [Canadian Pontiac Firefly] as a fun place to discuss fuel economy and green transportation. He's also got a great website showcasing his CRX mods here: http://www.crxmpg.com/. He swapped in a D15Z1 engine from a Civic VX, which has both vtec-e and lean burn. This, combined with a tall geared HX transaxle, allows his CRX to make some fantastic mpg numbers.

I hope he can get Darin to participate with us as well. Between Ben's CRX and Darin's Pontiac Firefly, we'll have the best of the best going head to head at our event!

I paid 5 bucks emoticon

I will play around with the piping later in the week.

Mark,

Let us know if you get this apparatus ready to test. If it works, A.M.E.C. will have the highest tech refill system going for these events.

Richard, welcome aboard!

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

Bill Clark had a car show he was planning to go to on August 23rd, but he has thought the better of it. He enjoyed Economy Run II so much last year in his 1960 Metropolitan convertible, that he plans to bring his '57 hardtop out and give it a go this year in the infamous "Gas Mileage Shootout in the Adirondacks".

Image
Here were his comments:

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to blow off the local show and come ride around with you guys in my 57 Met hardtop. I found a set of 3.90 gears to replace the stock 4.22s and I'm going to rebuild the carb, blow up the tires, take out the toe in and try to get my lower compression 1500 to run good. I'll be really happy if I do as well as the high compression 1500 rag top did last year."

Sign me up,

Bill

Welcome Mr. Bruce Turk!

So glad to have a classic Saab economy car on the roster! I still love the original "Little Saab Economy Car" jingle on the New Salem Saab web site home page.

Bruce will bring his beautifully restored 1958 Saab 93B.

Hi Mike,

I cleared my calendar and will participate in my 1958 Saab 93B. The completely stock 750cc three cylinder two stroke should do very well. I'll down jet the carb and replace my bias ply's with radials, that combined with the original three speed "free wheel" transmission will kick MPG butt.... I hope!

Please add me to the list and I'll see if I can get some other vintage Saabs to attend.

Regards,

Bruce Turk
