Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Mike, I am good to go. A co-worker has shown interest but has not committed. If it works out, he'll be on a Yamaha cruiser or older Honda sport bike, both carburated.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Now a Honda insight from Buffalo is on it's way. Heavy four seat Prius's are one thing, but a tiny two seat Honda Insight will take down a Prius in short order. The diesels are in touble now too.
Big numbers are on the horizon folks......

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Ernie, There's an article on Ecomodder regarding hypermiling a Ninja 250 just like yours. He changed the final drive just like are about to do. I think that you will find it interesting. Check it out here. He lays it all out from his 71 mpg baseline all the way up to his 101 mpg hypermiling techniques. The blueprint is there for you Ernie. You could be the top dog this August!

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Mike, thanks for the link. He's done the same mods that I plan to do. It's generally agreed that the pre-08 bikes tend to be 5-10 mpg better than the 08-09 Ninjas. The ace up my sleeve is my 16 tooth front sprocket (had to do some minor grinding to fit it), which should hopefully compensate for that advantage.
Right now the bike has 16/45 gearing, and I've got a 39 tooth rear sprocket that I'll install shortly before the Economy Run. This may render the bike unsafe in rush hour traffic, but sacrifices must be made. The rear sprocket will bring my ratio down to 2.43 from a stock of 3.21. The second mod will be to change the jetting back to stock (I've got it rich / biased towards more power currently) and tune the pilot jets to be a little leaner than normal. There's a calculated risk of glazing spark plugs, but I'll be carrying a couple extra plus some tools to adjust the jetting just in case. Also, if I notice things starting to run roughly or ping, I can hopefully adjust the mixture with the choke to cool things down
After that, it comes down to hypermiling technique. I don't think beating that guy's awesome 101 mpg is out of the question, we'll see!

So this brings up a few questions. Will you make Bruce top up with straight gas, or can he toss in a measured amount of 2-cycle oil to keep the mix right? Are the gallons measuring all things going into the tank, or only gas?
And now that I've dragged guy with a biodiesel VW in from parts unknown, how are you going to measure his fuel? Do you account for the different energy density of fish fry oil vs tortilla chip oil or McDonalds french fry oil?
And most importantly, I want to start right behind the bio car, so I get a nice popcorn aroma during the run.
