So this brings up a few questions. Will you make Bruce top up with straight gas, or can he toss in a measured amount of 2-cycle oil to keep the mix right? Are the gallons measuring all things going into the tank, or only gas?

Interesting question Tom. Do you have any suggestions? I will ask Bruce what the ratio of his mixture is. This will be Bruce's first ever economy run type of event and frankly I think he'd be lucky to get 30-32 mpg. That's three gallons of fuel for the run. That might add up to about a shot glass full of oil.

Nope, they run whatever concoction of home brewed grease they want to run and we top them off with regular diesel fuel at the pump afterwards. That's how we handled [last years overall winner] Jonathan Bartlett's fueling for his 2005 Passat TDI wagon.

Tom,

Here is Bruce's reply regarding how much 2-cycle oil he uses:

I use 600ml (approximately 2/3 quart) to 8 gallons of gas.
That's 75ml per gallon =
75 milliliter = 0.019 gallon [US, liquid]
So if I use 3 gallons multiply 3 X .019 = .057 gallons oil

I had guessed a shot glass full. So how close was I?

By the way, Registration is now closed for Economy Run III.

The fact that we filled up the event six weeks in advance is surprising
and encouraging at the same time. It shows that quite a few people really
want to participate in these types of events. Unfortunately, these events
are far and few between. We need more of them! They are not really
difficult to do and I hope we have inspired other groups or car clubs to
create their own versions of these events for all to enjoy.

That's one of the things I hated about the early SAAB 2cycles. You had to run the tank really low so that it would take 8 gals of gas so that you could add the can of SAAB oil. Or do some quick math.
After they came out with the oil injected engine, I bought one. For it's time, the SAABs were good on fuel mileage. Can't compare with today.

I think one of the best battles will be between Bruce Turk's 1958 Saab 93B and Bill Clark's 1957 Metropolitan hard top. Bill got 37.86 mpg with his similar '60 Met convert last October and Bruce predicts that he will be in the 35 to 40 mpg range with his 750cc 2-stroker.

Lets take a poll:

The Saab?

           or

The Metropolitan?

The US Dept. of Energy estimates that of the 20 million gallons of gas used every day, 3.5 million gallons could be saved with properly inflated tires.

That's what I get for procrastinating: 28th on a list of 25...
The '69 Sonett will be ready, if space opens up. Add my name to the wait list.

May I invite everyone on the waiting list to join us just for the fun of it? Even if you are not officially registered for the run, it would still be a lot of fun to have you guys around.

Trust me Martin, I want them too. I'm sure a few spots will open up. They always do.

It's going to be a very busy time at the gas pumps after the event. Economy Run I was only open to our members and had 7 cars. Economy Run II was opened up to all and had 15. The third time is the charm and this year we have an eclectic mix of historic classics and some of the best hypermilers in the northeast.

Economy Run III should be the best yet!

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

Update,

This past Monday night I drove out to the Citgo in Northville [where I had planned to finish the event], to talk to the owner, and see the facility in person. I was not satisfied with their limited lot space and found that they only had a single pump island. This would have created a problem.

So I have changed the finish of the event to the much larger Mayfield Mobil, 2460 State Highway 30 Mayfield, NY 12117 [where we concluded Economy Run I last August]. Their lot is plenty big for our large group and it has three pump islands to aid post event refills. This change adds 8.4 miles to the run, for a total of [approx.] 102 miles.

In a way, that is to bad. The Citgo station is located almost next to the road to Northampton. However, I do agree with your decision. Much better facility.
