Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
I found THE car for Economy Run III.
For those who don't recognize this picture, it was digitized from 8mm silent home movies that were filmed by Randy Koehler of Castleton, NY. It dates back from the late 1960's during an ice race on Lake George. As I understand it, the car on the right was built by three R.P.I. students. The body was made of ash wood. They called it the "Cigar Car". It used a Saab 96 floor pan and running gear and the inner cavities of the body were filled with some type of foam insulation. It is reputed to be the only ice racing car ever built, that would actually float if the ice ever failed.
Just put some lights and wipers on this baby and you will have the ultimate pulse and glide machine!

HELLO,
WOW!!!! i remember that car.
i must be gettin OLD. i was very young when that car was running. My DAD started going to the races in the late 60's and racing in 1971.i think the VW is Craig Robertson and what looks to be an Alpine might be Kim Graft.

Wow, you go back further than I thought Shannon. Do you [or anyone else] have any other details about this car? A name, or name of someone who knew these guys, anything? My son is going to RPI for camp this week and if I had anything to go on, I'd ask if they had any archives I could search through for pics or info on this car.
Richard, do you know anything about this car?

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Thanks Shannon. Imagine that car with a V-4 in it? I think I could get that up to 80-85 mpg rather easily!
I wonder where it is now.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
If it was wood it could have rotted away. RPI doesn't have specific records of anything, it'd be better to find the club or who did it as they might have records. Was it and RPI project or just some kids with spare time, etc? We tried building a rally car in an RPI club and RPI very much frowned upon it and forced us to get rid of the car (which meant sell it cheap to a member ), but if something similar happened to this, like 1 or 2 races and then RPI worried about liability, etc, it could be anywhere.
Even it if was a student project even the RPI library probably wouldn't have any info, you'd have to know with department it was (like Mech Es or whatnot) and hope a faculty member is old enough to remember, or check their records, I think it'd be in records but only on a per department basis, I don't think there's like a central archive.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
As I recall, they had problems keeping it running. Over heating was one, I think.
I don't know if it acctually competed.
I wonder what the CD would be.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Quite a few of the drivers coming from long distances will be staying in Fonda on Saturday night and getting together for dinner. If all of my mods on my B210 are sorted out beforehand I plan to join them. There will be more "interesting" looking cars this year with more visible aero mods than in the past. As in any other motorsport, the drivers are raising the stakes at each event. It won't be long until we see a four wheeled vehicle break the 100 mpg mark at one of our events.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III
As mentioned earlier in this thread, we have the pleasure of hosting both founders of Ecomodder.com, Darin Cosgrove of the 1000 Island's area of Ontario Canada, and Ben Jones of Hanover, NH. Ecomodder is a unique performance automotive web site that focuses on improving economy not horsepower.
I would like to give you all a little backround on one of them in this post. Darin Cosgrove is a young, but multi talented fabricator, restorer, and modifier.
He rebuilt this rusty $75 hulk of a Geo Metro [a Suzuki Swift derivative] into an EV [electric vehicle] in his garage at home. That not only included the electrical conversion, but serious rust repair, overhaul of the car's mechanicals, and complete bodywork and paint restoration as well.
Darin used electric fork lift and golf cart parts, and a pile of used batteries to build this car for under $1,000 Canadian. He calls the car "Forkenswift".
The build is very well documented, but the quickest way to get an overview is located on THIS site.
There are links from there if you really want to sink your teeth into it further [I did].
Of course this is just one of Darin's cars economy project cars and is not the one he will be bringing to Economy Run III. But this introduction was to give you all a better understanding of the caliber of people we will be hosting this year.
Coming long distance to the event he will be bringing his black Pontiac Firefly which is also heavily Ecomodded. It too, is a 3-cylinder, Geo Metro / Chevrolet Metro, Sprint / Suzuki Swift, derivative. He calls this one "Black Fly".
So as you can now see, we will be having some of the best hypermilers in the northeast at our event. It should truly be an educational and interesting time.
