Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
Well we're only 8 days away from our Summer Awards Picnic and Economy Run.
As you are now all aware of, A.M.E.C. will be bringing back their former Economy Run, last done in the mid 1950's! The timing of this event is perfect with today's skyrocketing gasoline prices. Don't be fooled into thinking this is not a competitive event. It will be quite a challenge in driving skill indeed!
At this time I am requesting a roll call to compile a list of the participants. Please let me know if you will be joining in and in what vehicle you'll be driving. I am maintaining the list and I will update it as your replies come in.
Economy Run Directions:
Starting spot will be at the Fairway Oil gas station on Route 5 in Fonda. Take Thruway Exit 28. After the toll booth, turn left onto Riverside Drive. Then turn right onto South Bridge Street and go over the bridge. On the other side of the bridge is a traffic light. You can see Fairway Oil and Gas on your left. Turn left onto Route 5 and enter the station. Arrival time would be 8:00-8:30am, first car off at 9:00am.

Official Economy Run Entry List
1. Dave Burnham - 1991 Diesel Jetta
2. **** Vedder - 2000 Ford ZX2 S/R
3. Mark Long - 1997 Dodge Avenger
4. Mike Kamm - 2000 Mazda Protege
5. Claude Hutchings - 1974 Saab Sonnett
6. Ernie Yue - 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250cc
7. Steve Mauk - Did not show
8. Mike Glock - 1995 Chevy Suburban
9. Kip Moncrief - Did not show
10. Eric Nelson - Did not show.
11. Ron Kienhuis - 1994 Subaru SVX
12.
We seemingly have a small field, but I am confident there will be a few ringers and last minute entries. BTW, the cutoff date for sign up is Friday, August 8th. As it stands now, I'd say the best overall mpg will be between Steve Mauk and Ernie Yue's motorcycles. The best ton/mile award will be an interesting contest however. Dave Burnham's diesel is favored here, but the three way battle of **** Vedder, Mark Long, and myself will be very close. And how about those classic Saabs?

C'mon people. Where is the competitive spirit. Besides there is nothing better than an early Sunday morning ride in the lower Adirondacks.

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
You can ad my name to the list, Chief Flagger Mike Glock. At this time it will be up to the weather gods as to what to compete with, the big Chevy 1 Ton Diesel Dually which hauls my 35 foot 10K trailer down the Thruway at 19mpg or the venerable 1600cc Volkswagon dune buggy which has no odometer and as such I have no idea what it is capable of.

Update from the picture above, taken on July 24th:
I'm still on the same tank, have logged 466 miles, and haven't been to a gas station in two weeks. This, even with lots of short trips and city traffic is very encouraging, [looking forward to the open roads of the Economy run.] Low fuel light is just starting to come on............Yes, I will make the magic 500 mile mark! I'll push it if I have too!

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
Thats great Mike, looks like there will be a real economical battle ahead. I just clocked 600 miles on my last tank full and the needle just went in the red zone. Not telling you how big the gas tank is....yet!!!

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
Maybe we should add another category called "Miles per Dollar". If a Diesel car gets 15% better mileage but the fuel costs 20% more than gas, the gas car would still be more economical to operate. Also a car using premium gas would be factored in. Also, 2 strokes would have to factor in the cost of oil.
