Hey Dave, coming bak from Canada is all down hill, according to the map. emoticon

For the run, I won't be doing much. A little work on air flow around the front. Remove the antenna. that has to be good for .00001 mpg. Remove any extraneous weight. I've been thinking of pulling the fuse for the HVAC blower because it runs all the time and just let ram air do the ventilation, another .00001 mpg. Of course helium in the tires, reduces weight.
Of course using non ethanol gas will give me another 1 mpg.
Musn't forget to wax the car for better airflow.

Lets hear what you guys are doing to your cars for this event.

I'm backing out of the garage, and driving a good part of the night in a 41 year old car
in the hopes that I can play.

I'm leaving on the 2 bbl Holley clone of a Webber, the high lift cam, the bigger valves, the big bore pistons, the wide 195-60 tires (27 psi front, 24 rear),
But if it's raining, that one'll stay home (too treacherous with light weight and wide tires).
Instead I'll come with my diesel convertible (top up of course).

ImageWho are you guys kidding? You are all full of baloney. I can hear the hole saws for the swiss cheese holes in your frames, and smell the choroplast boat tail sections being formed right now with your heat guns. emoticon

Yeah right...."I'm just going to pump my tires up".....Image

OK, I 'fess up.... I have a lead on some Craigslist 175-65-15 tires that will fit on the 4 1/2 inch wide rims better than the 195s presently installed.
That alone will save almost 20 square inches of frontal area!

Got just the right size belt tonight to connect my crank pulley to my water pump. That power robbing alternator [and fan blade] are history.

Mike, hope you carry an extra battery!

Also, those look like stock pulleys (?) If so, perhaps you'd get an extra 0.1 mpg out of a smaller crank pulley / larger water pump pulley.

Hi Ernie,

I will test to make sure it can go the distance before the event. I am guessing that I can go at least 150 miles without a problem. Other than signals and brake lights, the only electrical draw left is the ignition system.

That's about it for mechanical changes now. The biggest offender for fuel mileage by far is wind resistance. That's where my attentions need to be focused from here on in.

I hope our members will get a bit more motivated because the Ecomodder guys are going to mop the floors with most, if not all of our members. Remember, apart from ice racing, this is the biggest and most prestigious A.M.E.C. event of 2009. We are the Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club. There is a lot of talent in our club. Lets show them what we can do.

If I remove my side mirrors, that should be good for .005 mpg.
Dave, I'd like some of that extra, extra air.
Oh, that's right,I'm using helium.
Seriously, Mike an underdrive crank pulley can be a big help.

Richard, don't lull yourself into thinking that side mirror removal is insignificant. Think about it, they are sticking right out there in the wind. You can easily move that decimal place over two spots to the left for that change alone. It adds up quickly. I am sure that with about 30 minutes of time spent with some cardboard and tape, I could have your Escort up in the 45-47 mpg range rather easily. Most of that would simply come from driving techniques.

Same with Dave's diesel. Hypermiling techniques would have that car in the mid 60 mpg range without blinking.

You guys are leaving so much on the table!
