I'd just like to add that I can take these things too seriously at times and [Richard and Dave] I realize that you guys aren't at all lacking in ability, but simply in the interest in taking things to the next level in this case. That's cool of course. I'm sure you're busy with other things.

Me, well you've all seen my pattern before. I'll take this thing much further than most, and then when I accomplish my goals, head towards to the next big challenge.

That's just me. emoticon

Oh, you are correct. The thing is, how serious am I ?
Found and intersting thing on an antenna.
It has a Cd of 1.17 with a frontal area of 0.03 sq.ft. and will have as much drag as 1/8 sq.ft of frontal area.
Other things to consider, door handles and wiper blades.
Since I got 41 mpg without even trying,45/47 is not hard to imagine.
Of course a lot will depend on driver technique.

Dave, that A/C is gonna rob you some energy no matter what you do, be it chemical or potential energy. But if there's a stop at the bottom of a hill or if you need to limit your speed downhill, by all means stick it into gear and turn the A/C on, it'll be kinda free, else you'd be spending the energy in heat through your brakes.

I'm pretty sure we've got only ULSD everywhere up here too. I like the cheaper stuff though. As long as it's free of water, lower cetane diesel is supposedly often denser, hence contains more btu per volume than higher cetane diesel, or so I've been told by some truckers. My two best tanks were also done on the cheapest diesel I could find, but all that is anecdotal. With lower cetane diesel, since the ignition delay is longer, you ideally want to advance your timing a bit to compensate and get the most out of your fuel.

Rich, mirrors are worth roughly 2% each at highway speeds.

On my Jetta TDI 2000 I'll have front wheel deflectors, some grille blocks, a passenger side mirror delete, no wipers with a cowl cover and side skirts on for sure. I will also very probably have abs wheel skirts on all four wheels. And I hope to have a Kammback too, made out of plexi or heat shrinked polythene over a frame, I don't know yet.

But I might show up with a different car. I wrote a fuel economy tips article for TDICurious.ca a couple weeks ago. There's a chance, albeit small, I might get a 2009 Jetta TDI for the economy run to try to get pretty good mileage out of it and then write an article about the car, its mileage, and the economy run.

Mike,
I hope you realize that this has all been in a fun way. Some of us just look as the economy run as a fun thing to do without going to extreme. I honor your dedication and I expect you to do well.
Btw: removing the mirrors is not in the works.

Absolutely Richard. It's going to be quite an interesting technological challenge and I am greatly looking forward to it. Later, I plan to hypermile my SE-R and see what I can do with that.

Above are the standard spark plugs I just removed from my B210 engine next to the special four electrode "mpg" model spark plugs that are going in. Looks like I will gain some extra compression [every bit is welcome!] as the extended tip extends deeper into the chamber. The electrode is also of the "side gap" variety and has a slightly larger .045" air gap than the standard plug.

I installed them with clay to check for interference with the piston crown, and they cleared OK. This was necessary because I am using flat top pistons where dished pistons were originally used. I still wish that I had the 1.2 liter "mpg" engine that was available 30 years ago. But my 1.4 will have to do for now. Too much power! emoticon

With that long insulator, won't that be a cold plug ?
What brand are they ?

They are the correct NGK replacements for this engine. The four electrode plugs are a number 5 heat range which is standard. The plugs I took out are number 6's which are one step colder than stock. They were out of the twin side draft engine.

I wish I had my camera with me yesterday.
I filled up at Stewarts, getting 30 cents off ,thanks to Price Chopper.
Anyway I took a drive down thru the Catskills.
At one point, my trip odometer read 195 miles and I had only used 1/4 tank of gas.
That works out to 60.9 mpg and I wasn't hypermiling.

Too bad the gauge went down faster after that.

I know what you mean. My Protege's fuel gauge is the most skewed I have ever seen. If I fill it to the rim, I typically go 150 -170 miles before the needle comes off of "Full". On that incredible 54 mpg hyperdraft tankful I had coming back from NJ I got to 226 miles before the needle moved off of full. I knew right then and there I was on a record run.

re: What am I doing

My personal rule is that the car should be set up as close to stock as I can make it. That rule allows me to use most any period original equipment. My goal is for this car to do as good as my 60 convertible did last year, 37mpg. My 57 has spent the last ten years or so either in a trailer or the Norwich museum so when I started driving it there were some problems.
0. I safed out the brakes.
1. I replaced the distributor with one that has both advances working. (neither worked before)
2. I replaced the carb with a stock carb that did not have 1/8 inch free play in the throttle shaft.
3. I replaced the 4.22 gears with 3.90s from a Midget.
4. The alignment spec is zero to 1/8 inch toe in. Within the limitations of the bent wheels, I have it set to zero.
5. The bias plys are blown up to 37 pounds.
6. I mounted a vacuum guage.
7. I found a station that sells ethanol free gas.
8. This one is cheating but I'm ok with it. The stock header pipe is 1 1/2. The stock tail pipe is 1 1/8. I put in an 1 1/2 tail pipe.
9. I welded a bung in the header pipe and mounted an O2 sensor to see how the carb was working. It was showing a bit rich under light load, so I replaced the #97 compensating jet with a smaller #95 from an older car. Its leaner, but I don't think lean enough to be a problem.
10. Sometime in the next couple weeks I'll check the valve lash and change the plugs.

If nothing else, two things are going to happen. 1. This car is running better than it has in the last 33 years. 2. I'll have a nice Sunday morning ride.
Bill
