Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

Add me (one) for the picnic. Where is the proper sign-up for that part of the day? I'll go there and do it up right.

I discovered that one of my brake hoses had swelled shut. Brake pedal pressure was enough to "inflate" the hose and allow fluid into the brake cylinder, but there isn't enough pressure difference after releasing the pedal to allow the fluid to flow back. Result: one dragging disc. New hose is on it's way.
The 175-65-15s fit the skinny rims much better than the 195-60s. When the brakes are operational I'll see how much of the 51 psi rating of these tires I really want to use.
Timing is going to be left right where it is and has been. I might lower the idle rpm from the 1200 I've been using to closer to 900 but that extra rpm doesn't require all that much more fuel so I'm undecided if I will or not.
That decision has another consideration: Do I defeat the freewheel and leave the transmission locked (engine off coasting and the ability to bump re-start) or keep right on using freewheel (no engine braking, but no bump starting possible)? Hmmm....

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

I took a look at my front brakes this afternoon. I raised the car up, made a chalk mark on the tires, and gave the wheels a "spin test" [by hand] and counted three revolutions each side. So I decided to take them apart and clean them. I lubed the slides and found an NOS front disc brake hardware kit in my basement. I took advantage of the kit's extra parts to add a second spring between the pads to help them release more completely.

Image
Normally there is only a single spring on only one of the pins. The spin test yeilded 6 2/3rds revolutions afterwards. Must have helped a bit. emoticon

Got it, thanks Jonathan. No formal sign up is necessary for the picnic.

Glad to hear you're working on your car too. Sometimes it takes an event like this to get us motivated enough to get routine maintenance done on our cars. I know my car is better mechnically now than it was just last month. Same with Bill's Metropolitan!

Image I mounted the home made chin spoiler and taped the edges. Then I mounted the "economy" wheel/tire package. Afterwards I put it up on blocks [yes I know cement blocks aren't safe - don't try this at home - lol] to gain access to the entire undercarriage. Then I began to fabricate the forward belly pan section.

Image
I'm surprised that no one has asked why I am not entered in the Historic class where a '77 Datsun belongs.....the reason is because my plan is to compete at the highest level of this year's competition.

More tomorrow...... emoticon

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

I completed the main portion of the belly pan today. Lot's of time and energy went into it, but the result is quite nice. The header collector hangs down lower than anything else under the car. I knew this going in, so I had to decide whether to work around it and allow the exhaust system to be exposed, or lower the entire belly pan and close it in completely. I measured the height of the bottom of the chin spoiler to the floor and it was the same as the height of the header. So I decided to enclose the exhaust system in and have a perfectly flat belly pan front to back.

Image
I used aluminum tubing to space the pan to clear the header and pipe. I did not drill any holes in the car at all. I pressed plastic anchor bushings into pre-existing holes in the bottom of the frame rails. I used thin aluminum sheets [cut from food catering trays] as a heat sheild under the exhaust system. Not pretty but it should work fine and you won't be able to see it when this the side skirts are installed.

Image
Tomorrow I will fabricate the side skirts to close it all up. The rear of the pan slipped nicely under the rear valance panel. Again, there were no holes drilled in the car at all for this project. That's why it took a bit more time to do. I had to get creative to preserve the integrity of the car. I will try to get some finished pics tomorrow, but a black pan will be very hard to photograph. The bottom of the car is now completely smooth and flat.

Image What are you guys doing, still inflating your tires?

Check this out!

This is Carl Germain's 1950 Studebaker Champion Business Coupe. Carl will run in the Historic class next Sunday with this beauty.

It's interesting to note that this is the oldest car in competition, and in fact it is the only car entered that could have run in our inaugural event in 1954!

Mike,
The grill/headlight area need some work.I'm sure you have a paln for that.
I'm concerned about the exhaust. That is a terrific amount of heat enclosed.
I know, work a hot air outlet at the rear for a little jet assist.

I will add the clear headlamp covers and 1/2 grill block like last year, but I haven't come up with a better plan for the front end yet. I was thinking about a 3/4 scale Plymouth Superbird nose. emoticon

You're right about the need for providing an exit for the radiator and exhaust heat. Remember, by closing off the bottom of the car, I've also closed off the normal escape point of the underhood cooling air [between the frame rails along both sides of the engine]. This cooling air from the radiator must be able to flow through or it will back up and the engine will overheat], not to mention the adding unwanted aero drag. I will cut some large slots into the rear of the belly pan to [hopefully] solve this issue. I'm sure the floor temp of the car will be raised as well. Good thing I'll have that cooler with cold towels aboard as my "air conditioning".

You sure are going for it Mike! It’s good to see your enthusiasm I hope all the changes pan out in super high MPG numbers. I also hope it’s not as hot next weekend as it is this weekend otherwise you are going to have heat stroke!
Dave B
PS Jamie and I are both coming to the economy run and picnic.
