Hey nice to hear from you Jeffy.
No, the weight actually helps when going downhill.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
Why not include a diffuser in the rear. Instead of slots, leave a small opening at the rear of the pan so that it exhausts the heat to the rear, not down.
Got to start putting the air in the tires.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
I am putting snow tires onto my stock 89 CRX HF for lower rolling resistance. Nokian Hakka R 155/65/14. I hope I can handle the turns with the air pressure pumped up to 50psi.
Depending on how much time and energy I have I may also swap to a lower suspension (any dirt roads?) and put skirts over the rear wheels.
Oh yeah, and if I remember, I will change the airfilter.

Welcome to our message board Chang. Regarding the tires, I don't think winter tires have a lower rolling resistance. In fact I believe the opposite is true. They are made from softer rubber compounds and all of those sipes cause drag. That's why they call studdless winter tires "friction" tires. What tires are normally on the car? Tom Compoli got 63 mpg with wide tires [also @ 50 psi] last October on his gutted race car Rabbit.
Lowering and skirts definately help. If you have a set of used tires around that are tall and well worn, I'd use those. Less tread equals leass rolling resistance.
No dirt roads, all two lane blacktop.

Nokian magic. The Hakka R are the lowest rolling resistance tire made, or so they claim. I will find out.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd
I posted pics of my belly pan project on Ecomodder. Both website founders Ben Jones and Darin Cosgrove will be competitng this weekend. Both expressed interest in doing the same to their cars, but Darin, who is from Canada and bringing his Pontiac Firefly made this comment:
"I'd like to bring a belly pan to the competition, but I just know if I put it on, the border people are going to make me take it off to look for drugs and bombs and such."
Who'd have thought right?

Mike,
I'm curious as to what you are doing with your belly pan around the rear axle.

I actually used the rear axle to mount the rear of the pan. I attached it to the lower leaf spring mounts, so it actually moves with the suspension. Guess I better put a few test miles on the setup this week.
I am headed out to Stripes Sign Shop in Watervliet right now to get a third sheet of choroplast. The second sheet didn't have enough length left over to do the long side skirts.

Thanks Chang. That's certainly news to me. I found this on the Nokian website:
Ultra-Low Rolling Resistance
The new Hakkapeliitta R has the lowest rolling resistance of any tire in Nokian Tyres product line. Low rolling resistance not only saves you money at the gas pump but it also reduces your carbon footprint by lowering your CO2 emissions. The Hakkapeliitta R can save you .21 gallons of gasoline for every 100 miles you drive compared to a standard all-season tire. This will add up to a significant fuel cost savings over the life of your tires.
I never would have thought......
