Re: AMEC Economy Run IV - November 1st, 2009 + Go-Karts
Here were some of Martin's comments on his diesel's performance in yesterday's event:
I was a bit disappointed by my results [74.65 mpg], especially since I did a bit more to the car and I drove slower than the previous event. On the other hand, my coolant temp was only 100 F when I started the run and it took almost 10 miles to get it up to 180 F. Also, I'm wondering if the station had switched over to winterized diesel fuel. There can be up to a 15% difference in BTU content between summer straight D2 and the winter blend to prevent gelling.
Anyway, it was a lot of fun seeing everyone again and I'm glad I participated in this event. I'm looking forward to the Watkin's Glen Green Grand Prix economy event next spring.

Re: AMEC Economy Run IV - November 1st, 2009 + Go-Karts
Underhood air flow on a 93 was adjustable.
And it needed it, with the radiator behind the engine and no water pump.
The "window shade" was also used in cold weather to to reduce the air flow and in the fender wells were two air outlets which were closed off with "pie plates" in cold weather.
Just a little 2 cycle SAAB trivia.

Re: AMEC Economy Run IV - November 1st, 2009 + Go-Karts
Thanks for that Richard.
I just got an e mail from Jeff Dungen with the Toyota Levin. The 20 valve engine in his Levin is actually only a 1.6, not a 2.0!
I saw the "20" on his fender and thought it meant 2.0 liter.
Wow, 170 h.p. and 50 mpg is really awesome.

One more thing about Jeff Dungen:
He is the VP of Sports Motor Car Club Montreal which has been doing rallies since 1937. They usually put on about 10 TSD/navigation rallies per year. In the past, the club has held economy runs, but he thinks that was more than a decade ago now. He's hoping that they can revive that tradition and attract some interesting participants.

Thanks for that Mike. I'll be sure to contact Jeff and offer some help. I've been wanting to hold an economy run up here for a while.

Re: AMEC Economy Run IV - November 1st, 2009 + Go-Karts
You're welcome Martin. Let's hope that our events have sparked some enthusiasm for S.M.C.C.M. to start holding economy events again. I'd love to go to Montreal area for an economy run in the future.
Also, Jeff has uploaded his tremendous photos of his trip this past weekend onto his web site. Along with his very well written text, it is a must see!
The link to the whole "experience" is HERE.

Hobbit has also written a nice recap of his economy run weekend adventure with great pics as well. Good stuff indeed. Check it out HERE.

And look what I found on Hobbit's page.
It's an elevation map for the new route I put together for Economy Run IV. It wasn't as flat as I thought!
