Ah, Mike are you still sore
I think my official mpg was 48?
My "prep work" consisted of removing a borrowed drill press from my trunk, pumping my tires up to 60 and changing my oil and only putting enough to almost touch the "add" mark.
I drove slooow. I never went over 45, unless I was coasting, and coming over some of those hill I was only doing 25-30. I was in neutral a lot of the time.
I will give full disclosure why I might of recorded such a great MPG. I arrived at the start a bit early. I left and got a coffee. I went by the mini mart and saw gas was 3.99. I was close to empty and the AMEC officials said not to show up empty, so I filled up to the top, so much I spilled some. I drove back to the start, which was only a minute away. I then filled again under Dave's watchful eye and put in another $1.85?
When I refueled at the finish I filled only till the pump kicked off twice as per the instructions given at the driver's meeting.
I did not work at trying to "fill to the brim"
Anyway, on my way home from the party,I set the cruise at 65 , drove in the right lane and got 37 mpg.
The Dodge Avenger is one gas sipper. Who would of thought? I have 208K on it.

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
Very interesting Mark!
I think next time I will fill it until I can see it in the filler neck to get a more accurate measurement of fuel mileage. That's what Dave did [because diesel foams so easily].
On another note, I thought it was interesting that the Protege's wind drag coefficient number is 0.32 and the Avenger is 0.31.
Mark, I also noticed that the Avenger back bumpers appear to have some aerodynamic features about them on the lower edge. Do you think Dodge did that for styling or wind drag?

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
I wanted to see what I could get without doing anything special to the car. Just a check over.
I set limits on rpm's, 1500-2500, stay in fifth gear as much as possible, don't stop.
I drove at 50-55 mph, coasted in gear.
I had to use the defroster as the windshield kept steaming up, this turns the AC on.
I got 41.1 mpg, not bad for a car that is rated 32 mpg.
Next time I will try something different.

Speaking of next time, I would like to do another this fall. If I can't talk anyone else into putting it on, I will put it on myself. This was a great time and I want another shot at it......soon!
P.S. ****, I had the same problem with a fogged up windshield. I waited as long as possible, but at one point I just had to turn the defroster on [and hence the a/c]. The problem was that I did this going up a big hill. When the compressor clutch kicked in it felt like the parking brake was applied two clicks.

I think that is for styling. If you look under the car it does not mold into the bottom of the car.
After reading ****'s post I remembered I rainxed my windshield before the start of the run so I did not have to run my wipers. I also did not turn on the running lights during the rain storm and also would only turn on my defrost for a couple of seconds at a time. All to keep the alternator and compressor drag down.

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
I would like to thank John and Pam for allowing us to have the party at their camp. I know that must of been days of preparation and cleanup afterward.
It is really nice to be a member of AMEC.

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th
Mike, I could possibly go for another economy run this fall especially if it was when the trees are nice colors in October or something. I might even get talked into setting one up or helping set it up but I am not committing yet though. I have a bunch of projects to get done before winter sets in. It was fun to do and participate in.
My next change to the car would be installing an exhaust gas temp gauge. I have heard that if you can keep the exhaust temp at 600F (on a diesel) and you get the best economy.

I don't know how to put the results to the economy run on the measage board and we seem to have lost the year and type of car data. I would email them to somebody if they know.
