V.S.C.N.A. Fall Driving Tour October 18th, 2008

Image

Great news, Bruce Turk and the V.S.C.N.A. will again be holding their excellent Fall Driving Tour through the Catskill Mountains. And once again, A.M.E.C. members are cordially invited.

Image

This is a free event, put together by Bruce for our enjoyment. We hope you will bring your Street Legal class cars, Historic, or any of your other summer time cars are welcome as well. I encourage you all to join us on this exhilarating ride through the Fall foliage on Saturday, October 18th. Below is a copy of Bruce's message to his V.S.C.N.A. club membership with all of the details.

V.S.C.N.A. Fall Driving Tour October 18th, 2008

Let’s go for a drive on October 18th 2008, rain or shine. If you want to go, be at RiK Rydant's farm at 9:30 am for complimentary coffee and donuts. Departure time is 10:30am sharp. Address is 2700 Route 209 Marbletown, NY 12440, just south of Kingston NY.

Directions: NYS Thruway RT 87 to exit 19 (Kingston) to 209 South for 5.7 miles. The Farm will be on your right.

Please note: if you miss any of the 10:15am drivers meeting you will not receive your route instructions and will

NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE---

NO EXCEPTIONS! We are cracking down hard on reckless drivers. This is a tour, not a race.

We will be joined by The New York Saab Owners Club (N.Y.S.O.C.) and the Adirondack Motor Enthusiasts Club (A.M.E.C.) so expect a lot of interesting and varied vehicles. We will make two scheduled stops along the way, at a scenic overlook on Rt. 52 above Ellenville and at the Old Stone Church in Cragsmore.

Please pre-register for this event so we have an idea what to plan for. Go to http://www.nysoc.com/ click on 'sign up now' for the October 18th event, then click on 'sign-up'

After our last stop in Cragsmore, we will proceed to New Paltz NY via some very narrow and twisty roads for lunch at the Gilded Otter Restaurant and brewery: http://www.gildedotter.com/home.htm
Total drive time: approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.
Total miles: approximately 75
Total number of micro-brews available at the Gilded Otter: 8

As always, non-VSCNA members and their families are welcome. You don't even need a Saab! Please remember you never need an invitation to attend a VSCNA event, so bring along some friends and enjoy the drive.

We will divide into two groups, one “Historic" and one “Non-Historic”, additional groups will be added if needed. Please bring FRS radios if you have them! Arrive with a full tank of gas.

The route will take us through an incredible array of roads and terrain. Here is a brief description of the route:

Through historic Stone Ridge and past many Revolutionary War era homes. Over the Mohonk ridge near New Paltz, past the best rock climbing and repelling areas in the Northeast. Down the Shawangunk ridge on Tow Path road, literally driving through the ultra creepy and still functioning Eastern NY Correctional Facility, a castle-like, turn of the century maximum-security prison. http://www.correctionhistory.org/easternny100/html/eastory.html Back up the ridge on Gully road, through Historic Cragsmoor and down the ridiculously narrow and steep Vista Maria. Then just a whole slew of narrow twisty back roads to New Paltz.
Be there or be square.

Best regards,

Bruce Turk

V.S.C.N.A. Fall Driving Tour Update

Here's the latest from Bruce Turk. This is looking good!

Route instructions for our October 18th Fall Tour are now available for download here: http://www.nysoc.com/events/vscna08/index.php. Just click on the PDF file.

We strongly suggest bringing a color copy with you because the hazards are highlighted in RED. Copies available the day of the drive will be black and white.

New for this year will be Rally Pace Notes for a 3 mile stretch of Gully Road. Gully Road was ran last year in Rally New York, we took the actual rally notes and translated them to see if any co-drivers can successfully read turn by turn instructions to the driver. This will be a fun, if not impossible exercise :-) giving everyone an idea how real stage rally's are run.

Typical instructions will read as follows: 150 yards, Absolute Crest stay right, 150 yards right easy, fast crest, into 90 degree right climbing over crest, 50 yards, left easy, long, left medium climbing etc. Remember we are supplying pace notes for fun only and are not to be used to drive "at speed", not that we expect anyone to actually be able to follow them-- reading pace notes takes LOTS of practice.

With the absence of Saabtoberfest in PA this this Fall, our event will be bigger then ever. Be prepared for a fun filled and exciting day!

Best regards,
Bruce Turk
Pres. VSCNA

Re: V.S.C.N.A. Fall Driving Tour October 18th, 2008

Here's the latest from Bruce Turk regarding this terrific tour in the Catskills..

Fall Foliage Tour: Yes, it is huge. As of this writing we have 40 cars signed up with a great combination of vintage and newer Saabs. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up here: http://www.nysoc.com/events/vscna08/index.php
Live to far away you say? We have participants coming from as far away as Kansas!

This event is rain or shine.

Attention Co-drivers: Even though you will be following the car in front of you, they can make a wrong turn. Follow the notes; don’t assume the guy in front knows where they are going. The co-driver has a very important job that should be taken seriously. It’s up to you to warn the driver of oncoming hazards. If you do not have a co-driver please try to find one. Driving alone is not recommended.

Due to the size of the event we will probably arrive for lunch at the Gilded Otter at 1:30pm, possibly later. Please plan ahead and bring snacks and drinks to hold you over. We will be making three short stops en route, which will give us time to relax and regroup. Bathrooms will be available about 45 miles into the drive at the Sam’s Point Preserve. When you arrive at the Gilded Otter, please go inside and get a table ASAP, we do not have reserved tables and will be seated on a first come first served basis. Fall foliage season is a VERY busy time in the Catskills so please be patient at the Gilded Otter. We can all hang out in the restaurants parking lot after lunch.

Remember, this is a scenic drive, not a race. IF YOU CRASH YOUR CAR due to your negligence, a picture of your damaged vehicle with your name and a description of the incident will be on the front page of Vintage Views, the official newsletter of the Vintage Saab Club of North America. You will also be responsible for putting an end to our scenic drives FOREVER. Don’t let this happen to you, drive with caution.

Bruce Turk

If I can go it will be a last minute decision. Last year was a blast and I really want to go this year too, but I will have been out of town for 3 weekends in a row and need to stay home for one. But you never know!

I'd love to incorporate an economy run feature into the Historic group of drivers in Bruce's event, but I'm sure Bruce surely wants no part of that.

I just wish we could get more Historic cars out to our Economy run events. The V.S.C.N.A. draws a huge number of cool historic little cars! But the 2-strokers don't get squat for gas mileage. emoticon

I was really pleased that Bill Clark brought out his Metropolitan to our event. Image
