Official 2009 Rally Thread

Edit: This is a continuation of last year's 2008 rally thread, which can be seen HERE.

The 2010 and on rally thread can be seen Here

Time to start a new thread for 2009. There are several cool winter night TSD's that are available to us this year.

Image

First and foremost is the NER Vermont Winter Challenge/New England Winter Challenge, aka the "secret rally". Two events in one. This is an all night event. Details HERE. I'll be running in it for the third time and consider myself very fortunate to have one of the best navigators out there, Steve Clare.

Back again after several year's hiatus is the MoHud chapter of SCCA's Snowflake winter tsd rally on Saturday night January 24th, 2009. This year's event will start from the Malt River Brewing Company in Latham Circle Mall, [Latham, NY] in the late afternoon.

This rally features 100+ miles of TSD at moderate-to-brisk speeds, on all paved or at least treated roads - possibly [hopefully!] with snow up in the hills. Details here: http://www.mohud-scca.org/Rally/2009/SnowflakeRally.html.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Finger Lakes Region of SCCA has a great winter tsd series. Their schedule is HERE. There's one this Saturday night 1/10 near Rochester. These are time-speed-distance road rallies on twisty snow covered roads.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Image

And last but not least.......

The C.N.Y.I.R.A. European rallycross events are wheel to wheel rally races and they are offering two dates this winter, January 17 and March 28.

Their full schedule is HERE.

Cool! I'm rushing to finish up my 4WD Sentra wagon for this Saturday night. Even leaving my Menard car out in the cold until then. Priorities! emoticon

Randy Koehler will be my navigator for the Snowflake Rally Saturday night. He said that the last time he competed in this event was 33 years ago!

He was surprised to hear that I've got a map light for his side of the car, a pair of Hella 4000 compacts up front, and a digital odometer/rally computer too. He never had any of that stuff back in the day when he competed in a Rambler station wagon. emoticon

......hoping for some fresh snow on Saturday night to sweeten the deal. emoticon

The MoHud SCCA Snowflake Rally was a blast tonight. Randy Koehler and I took 1st place in the Equipped/Experienced class. emoticon

Here's a pic from the Snowflake Rally awards at the Malt River Brewing Company, courtesy of Jack Hanifan.

For you new guys, that's Randy Koehler on the right. He's a former ice racer and excellent A.M.E.C. scorer for many years.

Tom Compoli took 5th place in the Novice class [with no odometer at all]. Good result as it was his first ever tsd rally! I'm not sure where stockcarboy [Jeremy Pease] finished.

The route was through the deserted backroads of East Bern, Warner's Lake, Thompson Lake areas. I found out from Jack Hannifan and Jim Bishop that this event dates back to the early 50's when MoHud was formed.

The challenging roads made for a great event!

Re: Official 2009 Rally Thread

The 2009 Winter TSD season is going in full swing and I'm really enjoying it.

I've always wanted to run in one of the Finger Lakes Region SCCA Winter series events based out of the Rochester area and finally got to do that last night. This was all thanks to a last minute connection with Marnie Soom who agreed to be my navigator for this event. Marnie runs in this series as a driver but gave co-driving a try last night and was absolutely terrific. Out of 22 cars we finished 3rd in class and 8th overall. The rally started at 5:00 pm and finished at 11:00 pm back at Cheap Charlie's. I stayed late for the awards and then drove home afterwards and got home at 5:00 am! I logged over 680 miles for the day. Good thing gas is cheap this winter.

Image The rally was based out of Cheap Charlie's Restaurant in Bloomfield, NY.

Image

Image This group is serious and really enjoys their road rallies out in central/western NY. They have a points series and are a very competitive group. Here are a sampling of pics of the competitor's cars before the event. I left out the usual compliment of Subarus and Evos [of which there were plenty] in favor of the unusual cars that you don't see every day.

Image How about a Mazda MX3? Didn't think you'd see one of these at an event like this huh? These are cool cars. This one is Brian Fallon's and it was rebuilt from a wreck three years ago and now has 175,000 miles on it. It's got the base 110 h.p. 1.6 liter twin cam engine in it, but these were also available with the 1.8 liter V-6 in them packing 130 h.p.! I like those pair of big Hella 4000's on the nose too. Neat car and with John Simonson as his co-driver, they finished 3rd in the equipped class and 14th overall.

Image Ford Focus ZX3.

Image I mounted four new WS50 Blizzaks in the parking lot and was ready to go. I could have used some of the Evo's h.p. getting up some of those steep mountain grades that's for sure.

Image Check this out, Herbie was there doing battle too. This car is now privately owned, but some of you may recognize this car as the former SCCA ProRally car of Karl Schiebel from Speedvision TV in 1999. In 1999 Karl decided to contest the entire SCCA Pro Rally Series with this unusual racecar, a VW New Beetle. He raced in the Production class, and won the SCCA Production class Championship. VW produced an often seen commercial that featured this car as the "cute car" racing through the woods to victory.

Last night's event was not the snow covered paradise that most hoped for, but was a bit icy and quite muddy up on the mountain peaks of the Southern Tier. We passed those giant wind generators in the full moon's light and boy was it windy up there!

Image A good time was had by all and now I've got to get out and wash my car before the temps drop again!

Next weekend: the snow covered roads of nothern VT and the Vermont Winter Challenge. Steve Clare will co-drive. This is hard core winter rally at it's finest. The Blizzaks come off and the studded Hakka 2's go on.

The next event on the Finger Lakes Winter Road Rally schedule will be "Is this a Road?", coming up on Saturday February 21st. Details HERE.

Steve Clare and I are off to Barre, VT this afternoon for the Vermont Winter Challenge. The prospect of snowless roads is not what we hoped for but hey, it's good for you guys and ice racing though! We will sorely miss Sunday's race [if it is confirmed later today]. If so, I plan to head out from Barre tomorrow morning and check out whatever's left of the action at [Summit?] tomorrow. Four hours and 211 miles to Summit, then another 1.5 to get home after that.

Hey, winter's here now. Might as well enjoy it while it's here!

The place: Barre, VT

Image
The event: 2009 New England Region SCCA Vermont Winter Challenge all night road rally. Thirty four of the finest road rally teams from VT, NH, MA, RI, NY, NJ, CT, and even VA and MI came out to compete in this, the "Super Bowl" of winter road rallies in the northeast.

The cars: Subaru, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, VW, Merkur, Audi, Toyota, Saab, Mini, Suzuki, Acura, and even a GMC came out to do battle in this all night event which started at 8:00 pm and ended about 6:00 am on Sunday morning.

Image The rallymaster for this legenday event is 11 time National SCCA ProRally Champion John Buffum.

Image Driver's meeting. Many more teams standing behind me along the back wall.

In all there were 220 miles of rural, unpaved roads, which reached as far east as Littleton, NH , as far north as St. Johnsbury, VT, with Waterbury, VT and White River Jct, VT as the furthest western and southern destinations.

Image As usual, the car of choice was Subaru, which made up about 1/3 the field.

Image Here's a different Subaru WRX. It's Adam Brodeur's 6,000 original mile 2004 WRX with a Saab 9-2X front end on it. Adam got this car with frontal damage and only 2,000 miles on it!

Image Steve McKelvie's cool RWD Merkur XR4Ti.

Image Steve and I might not have been packing the same firepower as the other teams, but the little 1.6 liter '89 Sentra held it own during the twisty narrow roads of the event. Results are not out yet, but we had a solid and damage free run this year and regardless of how we fared, had an awesome adventure!
