AMEC Autocross at Albany Saratoga Speedway - Huge Success!
A.M.E.C. has done it once again. They pulled off another high quality and
highly unique motorsports event today at Albany Saratoga Speedway.
Before I go into the cars and drivers of this illustrious event, first on the priority list is the give the people who made it all happen a very hearty thank you! Unlike most autocross events, the participants in this one did not have to work....at all. The event was theirs to relax and enjoy. Our excellent and loyal club members made it all happen, and they did a terrific job. I did not get photos all of the workers, but here is a sampling of a few.
Club Treasurer [of 20+ years] Mike Glock handled the very busy position of race starter and timing equipment handler all day. And as usual, Mike also arranged for all of the event trophies.
Richard Vedder, the course marshal. Richard was one of the crew there all day on Friday helping set up the course and organizing the event logistics.
Bruce Carlton was recording the results all day on the large scoreboards supplied by the Lyons' family. Mark Long is assisting and he worked a corner at times during the day as well.
Butch and Josh Bulson officiated penalties in turn 3, and resetting pylons throughout the event. Matt and Ray Galusha, as well as George Lyons and Ken Marshall worked all other corners.
Stan Waddle gave up his spot in the driver's roster to work the event instead! He assisted Bruce Carlton in scoring.
Ken Marshall worked the start/finish line all day long, along with his daughter Karin as company.
Darryl Carl, lead a team of tech inspectors in the morning, did some announcing, and handed out the trophies after the event.
Ed Lyons, Darryl Carl, and Dave Burnham. Dave deserves the credit for being the guy with the vision of bringing back the A.M.E.C. Autocross events at Albany Saratoga. This guy is where it all started folks.
There were others helping of course, and if anyone's else has pics, please post them.
Well done everyone!

Re: AMEC Autocross at Albany Saratoga Speedway - Huge Success!
I was only there for about 1/2 hour, and only saw about 10 cars go by. This is about the only useable photo I took - everyone else was up against the wall going by me.
Maybe I can drive at the next one!

Re: AMEC Autocross at Albany Saratoga Speedway November 7th or 8th
We couldn't have gotten a better day weather-wise. Crystal clear skies and temps around 50 degrees.
The teams get their cars ready and tech inspected in the morning.
Poughkeepsie Sports Car Club standouts, Mark Van de Carr, Joe Austin, and Dennis Gatto mounting the race rubber on the Spitfire.
A drawing of the course, which included two laps for each run. The slalom was used only on the second lap and whether you entered it on the left or right was optional. The first lap was straight through. Giddyup!
A pic from the grandstands. When's the last time you had a grand stand to sit in at an autocross?
Bryon Seyfried's original 240Z in the staging area.
Joe Austin driving Mark Van de Carr's highly modified Triumph Spitfire, powered by a 4AGE Twin Cam Toyota powerplant.
Check out this bit of nostalgia! Driven all the way up from Long Island, this is Rich Dobbins driving his father's '64 Studebaker GT Hawk. Four barrels and high compression, gotta love it!
SL racer Phil LePore in his '93 Nissan NX2000 at the starting line.
Eric Roscoe in his turbocharged ice racing buggy heading to the start line. He finished assembling an entire new engine only hours before!
Registrar, and the man responsible for bringing back this event after 41 years, Dave Burnham in his turbocharged '84 Maserati Biturbo.
One of the Saabs from the New Salem Garage stables setting some super quick times.
Hard braking on the back straight.
Ed Tucker in his Porsche 928S.
Fastest time of the day went to Will Schambach in his 1990 turbocharged Flyin' Miata.
The engine in Will's car.
A.M.E.C. President John Subik, Dave Burnham, and Darryl Carl getting the trophies ready to hand out.
Dave Burnham announces the awards.
Ready to go to the Malta Diner. Mark Van de Carr's Spitfire does more than just haul the mail!

Wow that was fast [and a lot of work to type up]. Thanks Mark!
Going strictly from memory, I'll try to fill in some blanks:
Nathan Sanford: was supposed to be running the #60 Nissan 240SX in PU, but I don't remember seeing a 240SX yesterday?
Bill Grayson : #58 - 2009 Audi A5 - SO
Paul Havranek: #14 - 1991 Saab 900 turbo - MU
Ben Alden: The red/white Corrola drift car
Martin Ferrillo
W. John Smith
Shawn Ryba
Adam Baker
Jeff Henderson
The others were unregistered drivers who got in as a result of registered drivers that were no shows.

Re: AMEC Autocross at Albany Saratoga Speedway November 7th or 8th
Thank you all that came participated and especially our great AMEC workers they really worked hard all day long it was a really great day.
I would also like to thank members of other clubs that came and participated. They all had great suggestions for future autocrosses at AS. The guys from the Poughkeepsie sports car club were especially helpful (and fun to go out to dinner with!), The Connecticut C.A.R.T. guys and the local SCCA people. We really appreciate your input and look forward to more input and club friendship in the future.
Two guys that were invisible most of the day but we absolutely needed were Rob Reed and John Subik they spent most of the day way out at the entry gate having people sign the waivers that’s possibly the worst job of the event and they were happy to do it all day long, thanks guys.
I was especially pleased to see so many happy people, and their family’s that’s what keeps a club going and growing. You need to plant the seed for the next generation of members who will look forward to growing into racing or helping at an event in the future.
It was totally awesome for me to see all the Pashleys, Tom Graham, Duane Stangle and others from when I joined in the eighties, I even saw legendary ice racer Don Patch in the stands reportedly the first guy to ever turbo charge a 2 stroke SAAB. Also in attendance was Glen Watkins a very important past member who set up courses at Albany Saratoga Speedway back in the day. They all said if we do more autocrosses they will be back in force and help out in the future. Sometimes it takes a blast from the past to start the burners again for the future of an event lets hope we can do it again.
Any one that has any suggestions in regards to the autocross please shoot me an e mail, racing48 (at) nycap.rr.com or call me 518 875 6956.
Here are a few photos I took.
Dave Burnham
John Subik and Stan Waddel handling the 70+ people for registration.
Richard Pashley an AMEC past president and something like 15 year AMEC treasurer.
The Pashleys (and others car) eight drivers now that’s some fun they could have had there own class!
Here is photo you won't probably see very often. The 64" Studebaker, a Chenowth racing products dune buggy with turbo VW power and a new Ford GT 40 only at an autocross!
