The "Pigeon Appreciation" Thread...

Let's Hear It For Pigeons!

 ?

Yep... the 'Feral Pigeon' that we see all over the place... considered to be an 'escaped' version of the Domestic Pigeon, which can trace it's ancestory back to the 'proper' Rock Dove.

Pigeons though get bad press... known as 'Rats With Wings' and are often seen to be vermin and 'disease carriers'...

But DID YOU KNOW - Charles Darwin bred Domestic Pigeons? There's a thought.

Have a look at this...

"One of Darwin's interests, pigeon breeding, played a significant role both in the development of his theory of natural selection and in the way he presented his argument in The Origin of Species. Darwin wanted to demonstrate that new species could be created from a common ancestor by the accumulation of small changes over generations. He believed that studying breeding by artificial selection of animals like pigeons would provide evidence."

Anyhow I digress... back to the 'Feral Pigeon' - you have to admire these plucky wee fellers... out in all weathers, always seem to be 'shrug shouldered' to me and are the bird equivalent of crumpled detective Columbo.

Determined, hardy, and persistent in their endeavours to get food and they'll eat anything within reason.

A while back at Preston railwy station I saw a sign saying "Do Not Feed The Pigeons" - always the rebel, I thought "s*d that" and did the opposite - besides, the railway café sold their cr*p for ridiculous prices, so what one does with the food bought there is one's own business!

Anyhow, in celebration of these birds and their many colours/variations - here are some photos - hope you like them.
