Re: Hunting Bloodwolf

Speaking gently to the wind and the brush about him, Vendak prayed to the Bright Lady for concealment, and such it was given. His massive form, armor and all, turned a molten green and brown to blend in with the brush he was in. The stillness caused his broad ears to perk up and his wide nostrils to flare as he took in the scent of the forest itself.

Nearby, there had to be some foe, and it was only recent they arrived. He had not expected such a danger in confronting Bloodwolf, and he was forced to move back a few steps to the camp he made to slide the pack onto his back, and grasp the strung bow. He made no fire, and there was no tent, as his intentions were to remain unseen.

Vendak hoped that he had indeed remained unseen by the third party, but knew that the man had pointed at his location after he himself made it known to the Count and his Knights. The prayer for camoflage was his only hope at this point.

"Bright Lady, do not fail me now."

Re: Hunting Bloodwolf

From the northern woods burst a war band of orcs. Their screams were shrill, meant to freeze the blood. Their faces were painted in red and white, and they bore axes and maces in their strong hands. A priest was with them, cutting his wrists to give blood blessings of the dark god Ghore upon the war party. They seemed to emerge from a space of concealment upon a hill top, as if by magic.

There was no reason why these orcs would be waiting here along the road unless they knew someone important was here. This was no raid, this was an assassination attempt.

Count Ryan raised his shield, as arrows rained down upon he and his men. Thick barbs pierced the steel surface, but he was able to keep himself alive even as he shielded his young page with his own body. The knights who rode with him fared favorably, though wounds were taken from the suddenly appearing archers.

Bloodwolf acted, gripping a fallen tree with both powerful hands. He hoisted the log in the manner of the Kelts of Alba, and tossed it like a kaber end over end at the archers. It squashed one's head like a grape where it landed, and knocked another two prone. Yet three others remained, firing on the group.

One of the knights broke formation in search of personal glory, and charged in among the onrushing swarm of orcish warriors. His sword caught in the collarbone of one of the brutes, but the rest dragged him from his horse and broke his back with harsh blows. They left him then, to die by the roadside of exposure while they rushed the remaining defenders and the nobleman himself.

Vendak had the choice, to act or not to act. And if act, which side would he help?

Re: Hunting Bloodwolf

He did not hesitate once the opposing Orcs had shown themselves, and he was moving lowly along his own hillside to get just a bit closer to the group. There was a certain appreciation for the way Bloodwolf and Count Ryan handled themselves in the carnage of the ambush; one with compassion and the other with a brutally efficient strength.

In a smooth, practiced motion he both stood up and drew an arrow into his bow, so that when his knees were in position he released the shaft to fly to one of the archers, and with another shaft drawn back to the second. He would kill them with his powerful shots, or distract enough to allow the Knights below to organize against the foot troops.

Re: Hunting Bloodwolf

Arrows catching the charging orcs in the necks and faces caused a slackening of their momentum, but on they came. Two were dead by the time they reached the knights surrounding Count Ryan.

"Knighs with me. Rory, Skull, attack the hill." the count ordered smoothly.

As the orcs rushed his position, he joined his knights in facing them in an organized line of flashing hooves and swords.

A heretofore invisible individual appeared in the trees. Golden of hair and stylishly dressed. The youth wielded a golden harp, upon which he played so skillfully that he pulled the very sound out of the air upon the hill from whence the orcs had charged. The archers bows ceased their twangs, and the sound of a spell fell silent.

A wolven snarl was cut out as Skull leaped into the area of silence. Sword in hand, he cleaved through one archer at the waist, his blow carrying on diagonally to sever another orc's leg. Both archers collapsed in a bloody mess. The priest raised a totem flail of shrunken heads weighted with iron, but before the weapon could catch him, Skull kicked the Ghorite in the chest, folding him in half with blood spraying on his exhaled breath.

As fast as he was moving, he did not totally avoid harm. The remaining archer dropped his bow and chopped at the barbarian's back with a two handed axe. Reflexes honed in the harsh north lessened the blow, turning what might have been an incapacitating injury to a scratch along his flank. With a backhand slap of his blade, he rendered the remaining archer insensate. His attention was on something unseen, but something he could smell.

Vendak's arrows had taken their toll, and now the orcish ranger was watching the knights subdue or slay the remainder. Count Ryan was wounded from a lucky spear blow to the arm, but it was only a graze and he did not complain of it. His horse had kicked down the spear wielder, but the count did not take the unconscious orc's life. His eyes were roaming through the tree line, searching for the archer who had aided him.

Re: Hunting Bloodwolf

He was not too well hidden, though his camoflage might have made it hard to see him. Amber-gold eyes scanned the hillside from which the Orcs had come, and with his bow lowered, he moved carefully towards the Count and his group. The brush barely moved to his passage, and the campsite left behind was minimal compared to the elaborate human camps. He had heard of the name 'Skull' being of the Bloodwolf clan from Gresha, so the one he was hunting was indeed before him now.

He called out a deep voice thick with an Orukmar accent, "I approach."

One of the knights wheeled, shouting "Another orc!" Swords flashed in Vendak's direction, but the Count's voice rose with a cry of "Hold!"

The nobleman came closer, and gave a bow from horseback. "You have aided me, ranger." he said, not making mention of Vendak's breed. "I thank you on behalf of my men. Is there a way in which we might in turn help you?"

"I seek Bloodwolf." His reply was simple, but it was a very clear message to the Count. Vendak kept his distance, and, to show he meant no harm, slung his bow over his shoulder with a grace not known to many Orcs.

Re: Hunting Bloodwolf

Bloodwolf returned, stalking quietly like his namesake. Also like his namesake, he was sprayed liberally with the crimson byproduct of his savage combat prowess. The man's fangs could be clearly seen as he breathed partly through his mouth while his frantic heartbeat slowed back down to normal. Along with him came the bard, who was carrying the head of what looked to be a Mysterian mage, tonsured and marked with tattoos of arcane power on his forehead.

The count looked to Skull, and said "This good ranger seeks you, my friend. We've a touch of time to entertain his business. What say you?"

Skulls eyes of gleaming steel grey locked with the amber orbs of Vendak. He did not say anything, only let his lips form a grim kind of wolfish grin.

Vendak was a tall Orc, but more slender by a slight bit, and he looked down, just barely, to the large Notherner. His dark tongue reached out to lick one of his tusks idly, as if searching for a bit of the meal he had earlier. The Hunter knew he was no match for Bloodwolf, but nor would he resign to being submissive; he did not break the gaze, or perhaps he was just stuck there.

"Someone tried to hire me, to kill you," he said in a sudden tone.

Skull, whatever his nature, was one to honour friendly warnings. He nodded to the orc, and rumbled the word "Who?"

Not far away, the bard Rory was muttering to the count "Barrek I'll wager. I saw him once, tryin' tae spread his version o' things."
