Throttle Lag

Hi Guys,

David M has correctly suggested that we should create a new thread on this subject rather than have it buried inside one of the Intro. posts, as this would give it more exposure and will generate a good discussion (Thank you Dave)

I will be copying the corresponding responses from the Intro. thread here shortly.

How long have you been having the throttle problems for? Do you have a series one and had the Recall carried out? You might want to check out these two threads:

Recall Catalytic Converter & O2 Sensor Breakage:
http://com1.runboard.com/baustralianxtrail.fmainchat.t234

Engine Revs on Start-Up:
http://com1.runboard.com/baustralianxtrail.fmainchat.t273

Could also be something to do with a “dirty throttle body”

If your experiencing some engine lag, you might want to seriously consider upgrading the standard air filter to a K&N. The K&N would have to one of the cheapest options to gain a considerable increase on power and engine efficiency.

Cheers

Noel

Re: Throttle Lag

The delayed throttle response is something that is normal on the xtrail and any car using the electronic throttle instead of the mechanical throttle "old" technology.

Try pressing the accelerator when the car is stationary and you would notice the delay in the response as well.

I found it hard to get used to this compared to my previous cars, but you'll get used to it after a while.

It's not a malfunction, it's a feature emoticon

Surprised by your answer above, Jalal - I have never noticed any throttle lag - and I think I would notice 20 seconds Michael mentions.
I do have the K&N filter Noel mentioned, and I use (now) 98 octane. Mine is automatic, so a difference there, but I tried Michael's experiment this morning and got a very quick kick down a gear and increase engine revs.
BTW, I thought the electronic control is what is called "fly by wire" i.e. an electrical signal in a wire rather than a direct mechanical connection.
That's why I've ordered a fly by wire cruise control.

Dave, same here automatic and I used to feel the throttle lag/delayed response even more before installing the K&N filter, since then it has improved a bit, but it is no where near the old technology of a mechanical throttle response time.

Yes, you're correct, my mistake. I meant to say the current electronic technology compared to the old mechanical one. I will fix-up my post to make it clear. Thanks for the correction.

Hi guys i had a look at the matt on the floor. I thought the matt has edged it's way up to the throttle control on the floor so i cut the matt just in case but still the same and got the wife on my back 4 that one lol thats life.

I talked 2 nissan dealer here they said that they would look at it under warranty but if they don't find anything wrong with it they may charge me 4 it .

I think that stinks. But if it keeps the wife off my back she drives the car all the time.

I'd keep at them. I believe that any throttle lag is unacceptable. If we're using the teminology to mean the same thing, maybe you need to check yours out too Jalal - fly by wire should make no difference to a mechanical connection in this.

Re: Throttle Lag

Dave,

I wouldn't say that my throttle hangs there for 20 seconds, but the response I noticed when I compare it to the mechanical throttle is slower when you press the accelerator, even more so noticeable when you floor it.

The new technology does make a difference in this regard I would have thought, as it being controlled by the ECU.

Michael...

While I haven't experienced your situation, I have noticed something abit similar...

Every automatic I've ever driven in the past (work vehicles) has had noticeable "lag". Ford seemed to be the worst. So it comes as no surprise that all the cars I've owned were all manual. However, when I got married and it came time to sell my previous car to accomodate a wife who wont drive a manual (no offence to Clare, if you ever read this!), I was quite surprised at the lack of any such lag in the X-Trail as I'd found in all other automatic cars I've driven.

I've noticed a few times in the last few months that if I'm accelerating moderately from stand-still, and then back off the accelerator, it seems to "run on" for maybe a second, or surge forward if it decides to shift up a gear just as I back off the accelerator. I think it's nothing serious, and more likely a chance occurence as I mis-time my backing-off of the accelerator just as the gearbox decides it wants to shift up a gear.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Rich
