posticon Head gasket blown

It's been a while since I posted, and unfortunately it's not in happy circumstances.

I had to tow the x-trail to the mecahic this morning as it wouldn't start, and it appeared that there is water in the oil. Even the mechanic thinks that it's a blown head gasket emoticon . The mechanic thinks that it won't start because one cylinder is probably 1.2 full of water. Oh double bugger.

I just wanted to check that nobody else had blown one, the 3.0L engine problem in the patrol still echos in my ear a little.

So apart from that, I thought i'd see if anybody knows what might have caused it . I mean i'm not so concerned, but the missus asked, and if we are going to keep it much longer i'd kinda like to know why.

Oh, and I thought that i'd ad, it's a 2002 manual, with 140,000 km on the clock, and we are the 2nd owners.

Just got confirmation form the mechanic, water in No1 and No2 cylinders, no wonder it wouldn't start. Bugger.

Re: Head gasket blown

Phoenix76,

I am sorry to hear about your problem.

One of the causes of a blown head gasket on the exy (and it has happened before to others) is a leak in the radiator.

The coolant is actually going to cylinder 2 directly.

Your fan must have been working overtime trying to keep-up and compensate for the heat.

Has the mechanic done the compression test?

Also make sure you ask the mechanic to check that there are no cracks in the engine as a result of the heat, if there is a crack, replacing the head-gasket wont be any good and you will need a new engine.

I hope it turns out easy enough to fix and that there hasn't been any further complications.

Re: Head gasket blown

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I gather your mechanic will do all the right prechecks before replacing your head gasket.
Blown head gaskets are commonly caused by a huge increase of engine heat which happens with the absense of sufficient coolant, oil, airflow, or faulty waterpumps.
The important thing here is the cause is discovered and rectified.
Another problem this may cause is cracking of the cylinder head, and ( god forbid ), bent conrods. Bent conrods occur when there is sufficient coolant in the cylinder to cause a 'hydraulic lock'. ( water is NOT compressable... enough water will prevent the piston from reaching TDC.. hense somethings gotta give .. ie the conrod)
Please ensure your mechanic has your head pressure tested for cracks, checked for straightness and machined. This is something he needs to send the head away for.
Bent rods can be checked by measuring the distance between piston crown and cylinder block surfaces. Comparison of these measurements on all 4 cylinders should give you an fairly accurate idea whether any rods are bent.
Good Luck.. and again,.. sorry

Re: Head gasket blown

I posted this in the white smoke thred

I have just had the head gasket replaced i did not notice any white smoke but i had a day when the temp went up and i had to top up the coolant as i was near the 100k (2001 x-trail)i booked it in for a service as well, $2500 later
I was told the problem was a blocked radiator, get this, blocked with casting sand, sand could have been from block or radiator, but it sure put a dent in my wallet that was from Nissan Southport,i feel like reporting this to Nissan Aust how many other potential blocked radiators are lurking out there,so i would suggest anyone with high klms on the clock get the cooling system cleaned

Re: Head gasket blown

This whole casting sand issue has popped up a few times now... it's a bit concerning... maybe the subject should be brought to Nissan's attention as barney5 suggested.

I'm just curious to see if warranty was discussed even though the Exy is out of warranty as this sounds as though it should be covered. I remember Jalal saying somewhere there is a nissan person as a member of the forum he might be able shed light on the matter as to why a manufacturing fault is not covered by warranty

Re: Head gasket blown

The possibility of a hydralock isn't lost on me, as I kno a few people who have done that four wheel driving (I take the land rover for that though).

The mechanic is going to have the head pressure tested, and I trust that he knows what he is going and will find the underlying cause. Interesting point about the casting sand though, i'll ask him to check the radiator for any signs of any.

Hopefully it doesn't cost that much though barney emoticon

Re: Head gasket blown

Looking like it will be about the $1k mark for the repairs. Interestingly the people at the nissan dealer that the mechanic spoke to said that they are having a number of x-trails in with blown head gaskets between 120 and 150 thousand km's. Bugger :-(

Did they elaborate what are they finding the cause of it to be? If it is a consistent fault that you can confirm (through the dealer) I will try to push the issue further through Nissan from my side, but I will need confirmed evidence and facts (like the number of xtrails with this problem and what the fault was)
