Tappet noise on cold startup

My T31 with just over 1000ks on the clock and its had its first service is noisy when cold

When its cold there is quite a loud tappet sound until (I assume) oil pressure has built sufficiently (a couple of seconds) ...is this normal, or is there an oil pump problem ?

Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

All Xtrails are a little tappy when started cold.
Its just till the oil gets to the top of the engine.
It should stop after 3 -4 seconds.

Thanks, I had assumed at first it was thin oil used during run in or something.

Very interesting, I did not know any alternators had a clutch. Usually they are on aircon compressors emoticon
I will have to go look at the service manual now.

Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

Its not tappet noise.

All X trails motors run Timing chains as opposed to timing belts.
Its the Timing chain cold rattle.

It isnt an issue.

Just make sure you use an oil filter with an anti drain back valve and one day if it does get worse just replace the timing chain tensioner!.

Seriously Guys. I dont mean to be rude but can people refrain from posting the wrong information if they dont know something. It just confuses the poor original poster.

off topic but RE: kev
yeh the alternators have a kinda one way clutch similar to a mountain bike, you pedal real fast and then stop pedaling and the wheels keep spinning after u stop pedaling. if you shut off your engine and its quiet around you, you can still hear the alternator spin and slow down for a few secs

How do I know if a non-Nissan Oil filter has an anti drain-back valve?

What's a authentic Nissan oil filter worth?

Stock nissan oil filters have them. Some aftermarket ones will have it too. The autospares place who sells them should be able to tell you.

The K&N Oil Filters have the anti-drain back valve on them too.
