Starter Motor Issues?
Hi all,
My 2005 manual exy (70,000ks on the clock) has just in the past week had starting issues.
The battery has plenty of charge but on the third or fourth start I'll hear the start motor spinning but the engine is not turning over - as if the starter cog/gear has not shot out and engaged.
So what do you think? Is my starter motor cactus? Is it another common issue?
If someone's replaced a starter, how much should I expect to pay?
Any help would be great.
Thanks
Danny

To me this sounds like the soleniod on the starter motor has gone.
Its job is to through the gear onto the flywheel to turn the engine over.
Might be an idea to call into an auto electrician to test it.

Re: Starter Motor Issues?
Hi guys, Just got the X Trail back and the auto electrician said the best way to go about it was to recondition the starter motor. Cost $286.
He said there was sand in it which is fair enough after having a flywheel replaced due to an ill-fated trip to Fraser and getting seriously bogged - leaving the motor running for the aircon for the kids and sand getting sucked into the bellhousing like a vacuum cleaner.
So it make sense that sand also got into the starter.
The only thing that didn't make sense to me (and tell me if you think the auto electrician BS'd me) is he said when he called after dropping the car off that there are no after market starter motors for xtrails and that a nissan one is $1,300!
That's when he said he could rebuild it for less than $300 so i said go for it.
I jumped on ebay tonight and someone from victoria sells them for around mid $200!
Also, in typical car mechanic fashion said to my wife the battery wasn't 100%, needed replacing and if it is running undercharge it may ruin the new starter. - She told him not to worry about it.
He also said there was still sand in the bellhousing which is also odd because when the flywheel was replaced Nissan (who replaced it) fully cleaned it out.
So I am wondering if he has no confidence in his reconditioned starter... I ponder.
Additional problem. The radio needs its code. I have had the car since new and the card it usually comes on has never been inside the car or the service book folder. Now I have no radio!

Re: Starter Motor Issues?
You should have tried finding one from the wreckers.

Re: Starter Motor Issues?
That's true mate but just didn't have the time. It's my wife's car and I would have been toast if it was off the road for the week until I got to the wreckers.

Re: Starter Motor Issues?
If you ring Nissan and tell them your VIN no. or chassis no., they will give you your radio code.
