Crank Pulleys
Has anyone fitted light weight or underdrive crank pulleys to their xtrails? less load/drag on the engine has to be a good thing.

Re: Crank Pulleys
read em, not really much help. they get mentioned but not discussed. was after any info on charge problems etc with the underdrive pulleys etc.

Re: Crank Pulleys
I almost bought a set of underdrive pulleys for my previous car; after browsing a couple of different related forums, came to the conclusion that it would not be detrimental to the engine (that is purely my opinion from experience of others that had installed them). One of the main concerns I had was alternator output (is that what you implied by "charge problems"?) due to running a substantial stereo system, and my research showed that the output of the alternator would only slightly affected by the underdrive pulleys; once you got up to speed (and therefore revs) it was no longer an issue.
I wouldn't expect our engine to be any different to any other engine with the use of the pulleys.
I was going to provide some other links for you to read in other forums but the search came up with too many results for me to try and narrow them down to a suitable number. I expect you've probably already read up on it considerably anyway.

Re: Crank Pulleys
I think the real use for "Undersized" pulleys is where you have a high reving motor, and use high revs a LOT (racing etc). The alternator has a rev range where it works best. In fact if it's spinning too fast, it's fan doesn't work properly and nor does it's electricty generating ability (brushes don't touch slip ringsproperly). So ordinary pulleys are not appropriate for constant high revs.
In a high revving car the problem would be that at high speed the alternator is not working properly, or may even fail, while electrical requirements are highest - fuel injection and ignition coils drawing their highest current.
The biggest problem with ordinary cars and underdrive pulleys is that, the alternator is not in its operating range while the car is idling (and maybe not even at low driving revs), and so the battery voltage starts to slowly fall, just a bit. With a lot of idling and slow driving (stop-start traffic) you could end up with a flat battery! Also all this "charge/not charging" cycling will be putting a lot of extra strain on electricals:
1. Alternator and battery (obvious suspects)
2. ECU and Injectors (the ECU has to adjust injector duty cycle to compensate for voltage, especially at idle)

Re: Crank Pulleys
yeah by "charge problems" i ment with the power steering pump and alternator turning a considerable speed lower than engine rpm, have people had charge lights on the dash come on at idle or light being dim or headlights "strobing". i guess their for people with high power outputs and very little electrical consumables aka stereos and spotlights. cheers for the input

Re: Crank Pulleys
Hi Taylor,
Search ebay for "QR25DE" and you will see the OBX Power Crank Pulley.
It is only 1pound instead of the stock 5pounds so it should give better responsiveness due to less rotational mass.
