Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Hi Guys,

Looks like NSW (and other states soon after) will have a fight on their hands with the new regulations coming into effect on the 1st of August, 2009 and it doesn't sound promising at all.

The fight is on as detailed HERE and you can be part of it to voice your objections and make a difference.

I also read about it in an article on p29 of the Sunday Tele last weekend...

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

I spoke to 2 places in Brisbane today RE a spring lift for the silver bullet...ARB and opposite lock could both only offer me a 25-35mm increase.

Anyone in Brisbane lifted theirs recently and got the result they were actually looking for ?

In a perfect world, I'd like 50mm via spacers to keep the standard "feel" of the car, and then a strut bar to tighten it up a little. Both people mentioned that the drive train REALLY does not like to be up around 50 and will grate (which I've read on here too)

Has anyone had any issues in soft sand with a stock setup and bottoming out often ?

Ben

Thats primarily why I wanted a lift. Not often, but once or twice is enough for me.

Mate, I installed the Superior Engineering Spacers. The only grating I had was caused by a fault on my behalf when installing (being the stone guard rubbing on the back of my disc.) Easy fix.
Havent had a single problem after about 4000km. Perfect ride and feel around town, the owner of the car hasnt even commented on any difference in ride, breaking, cornering etc. Full lock turns on dirt tracks and sand hasnt caused any problems.
No squeaks, rattles or knocks.
And it is a guaranteed 50mm lift, not a possible 30-40mm and they wont sag at all. emoticon
Love em

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Hi Guys,

The NSW regulation changes which were supposed to take effect on the 1st of August, 2009 are now ON HOLD as confirmed by the minister of roads in the following media release letter:

quote:

NEWS RELEASE
MINISTER AGREES TO FURTHER CONSULTATION ON
CAR MODIFICATION LAWS
Wednesday 29 July 2009
Minister for Roads Michael Daley today met with representatives from the 4WD community and car industry who asked for the introduction of proposed vehicle modification rules to be delayed and for more time to consult.
Mr Daley said he agreed to put the rule changes on hold and that more consultation was needed following the meeting.
“I’ve listened to feedback from the industry and the community, and have agreed to set up a working party to look more closely at how we are going to address this road safety issue,” he said.
“All of those who attended today’s meeting agreed that safety is paramount and that unsafe modifications of vehicles do need be stamped out.
“The working group will include representatives from the NSW Centre for Road Safety, Four Wheel Drive NSW-ACT, Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association, the Australian 4WD Industry Council as well as other agencies and experts,” Mr Daley said.
Executive Director of Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association Stuart Charity said this was a terrific outcome.
“We’re passionate about road safety and we understand the intent of the regulation is to make the roads safer,” he said.
We’re looking forward to working towards a practical solution that meets road safety objectives while also taking industry views into account,” Mr Charity said.
Greg Redfern from Four Wheel Drive NSW-ACT also welcomed the outcome and said the working group would have their full support.
“We want to eliminate unsafe practices in the driving community and we’ll work with the government to make sure these new regulations meet those objectives without any adverse consequences for the motoring community at large,” he said.
“We all agree that there is no place for extreme and illegal modifications, but the clubs in our association follow a strict code of conduct and ethics, and we want to make sure they’re not punished,” Mr Redfern said.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

I got a set of King Springs put in a few weeks ago. I got pedders to install them for me. Since i was paying the labour i decided to get them to put in new shock absorbers too. These are the same travel limit according to pedders. They reckoned this is fine as the other components on the car such as transmission shaft can only handle so much of an angle anyway. I got the camber pins installed as well.

I was planning on installing these myself but i couldn't get the two lower strut bolts undone. Don't have an impact wrench.

Ride is a little firmer but is still ok. I was a little concerned that being firmer would be worse for offroad but it still seems to climb over the rocks alright.

Hi Mat

I have a Pedders Lift, wondering what your reference to Camber Pins is about.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

The camber pins are used to correct the wheel alignment. When you install springs to lift the X-Trail the wheel alignment goes out heaps!!! I initially didn't have the wheel alignment done as i was going to do it a week later when i put new tyres on. It made the car very difficult to handle. One corner near where i live i can easily go round at 40-45km/hour once springs in with no wheel alignment i was understeering heaps at only 25km/hour.

The camber pins are slightly stronger and longer to along for more adjustment. It has been mentioned in this thread before. Due to varying tolerances some X-Trails don't have enough adjustment using existing bolt for camber adjustment. Even though you didn't need them this time round later down the track you may or may not need to put these in to correct the camber. I paid $220 for camber pins and wheel alignment.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

 emoticon Thanks Mat

My tyres don,t seem to be showing any sign of wear or scrubbing but will consider these down the track. I guess any suspension firm such as Pedders could supply them.
I have a strut bar and my handling is better since I lifted the suspension than it was before and I put this down to the increased spring rate of the Pedder springs.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Hi Dave (Robbo0001),

How are the strut spacers going ? Any mechanical problems arising from them ?
I'm thinking of doing these very soon.

Do you think they are something I could fit myself ? What tools do I need ?
