Re: T30 Suspension Lift

(My $.02 worth...)

Kev I'd say you'd need a spring compressor at least, plus a few of your normal tools.
Cant see it being a hard job, just disconnect the hub from the strut (front ones are easy) and the 3 bolts on the top of the strut tower (as you would install a strut brace). Touch wood, they should come out easily! Only thing i can see is that the bolts might be pretty tough, being exposed to the elements and all...

I'm looking at installing coil-overs soon, so if someone could post up some pics of how to remove the strut, it would be much appreciated...

Kev,

look at my posting from about a year and a half ago. I described how I did it.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Hi Dave and Alex,

I just went back through the posts and found Dave's post on p52, Alex's post on p43 and the original post on p12 so I got a better idea on how and what to do.

Still interested in both of your experiences so far in relation to CV wear and any noises.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

The noises I talked about have not got any worse (or better). I suspect they are wheel bearing, but then I would have expected them to get worse over the last 15 000km, which they haven't. I wouldn't know about CV wear: how can you tell?

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

I would expect that any excessive CV wear would have produced some grinding noises on corners which is not audible when running straight.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Apart from blowing a front CV (my belief due to age) I havent had a single squeak, rattle or knock in the Exy since doing it, Still rides well and hasnt sunk at all...

Only tool I can recommend is a long extension bar, or a piece of pipe to slip over the ratchet, to crack the lower strut nuts. Hit it with some CRC the night before to soften them up.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

I'm still keen to get the spacers... I wonder if I can convince Clare to let me get them, with my birthday coming up soon emoticon They'd cost less than her birthday present emoticon

Shame I lost my length of pipe to undo tight nuts when I took it across the road several weeks ago to help a neighbour's mate change his wheels over. He took off without returning it... Grrr!

Edit: Mistress of finance has handed over decision to minister of finance and he has approved. Woohoo! And I'll be getting my length of pipe back from the neighbour's mate tomorrow.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Hi Guys, I finally got around to improving the xtrails ground clearance with a Kings spring upgrade. I ran a trip near Mansfield a few weeks ago and the car touched underneath slightly while travelling over a few conservation mounds, as the family was all onboard they could see first hand that the clearance in standard form was inadequate.

I visited a trusted local suspension mechanic who took a look at the car, he judged the shockers would last another 3- 4 years so only spring change was required. At $550 fitted for the kings springs i was more than happy, he also painted them in black as i wanted the original colour coding and not the aftermarket look. Ride seems only very slightly firmer which is not a bad thing and lift is about 35 - 40 mm.
