Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust
Hi All,
Note for the forum Gestapo: I did a search on this topic and there is not much mentioned.
How much brake dust should I expect from my brand new 2006 STS and should I "burn in" the brake pads.
My front wheels are looking grotty after 300kms.
If this is normal, I'll be driving to my mechanic to replace the factory pads with those mentioned by others in the "DIY brake pad change" thread.

Luke,
The forum "Gestapo" confirms that this hasn't been asked before and you're in the clear, however referring to the admin team with such a term will get you into trouble! We're not operating a concentration camp here for sure (if that is what you meant)
Excessive dust from the factory pads can be expected, my front alloys where black at all times and this is exactly what made me change them, as that dust will eat into the alloys coating after a while and you won't be able to wash it off.
Factory pads are of very poor quality indeed.
The dust however should reduce a bit after the run-in period on new pads, so in your case, that would decrease a "little" but you will still see plenty of dust to make your front alloys look black.
If you can bare that for around 45,000kms, then you can change to different pads then.

There are quite a few brands of Kevlar pads out there to suit the X-trail. You will notice a huge difference with Kevlar pads and dust. Also your braking distance will be reduced.
I have some Kevlar pads I bought from Japan on mine and the dust issue is like chalk and cheese.
(Also they nearly cost half as much as the Nissan original pads!)

EBC Pads and I swear by them all the way!
Been using them for over 35,000kms now and couldn't be happier. However after my recent "power pack" mod, I don't think even the EBC pads will cope 
I checked brake upgrade options and $5000 didn't appeal to me that much for discs, pads and new brake lines.

Jalal, You could spend considerably less to get a vast improvement on your braking. There are ADR approved braided hoses available (they sell for about $280 to 300 custom made) and an upgrade of fluid would make a world of difference. I've also noticed a heap of movement with the master cylinder. A brace there would help a lot! (Your pretty good with making brackets, I've seen your handy work.)
I would hazard a guess as well that there are plenty of calipers that will suit the Exy. The disks are pretty big so I'm wondering if one of the calipers from a Nissan GTR or something might slot in. All it means is a bit research would be involved. You could always ask Darren at Just Jap whether you could borrow some calipers. He's pretty good that way.

Yes, Ive been reading about the braided hoses lately and I'm in the process of researching this mod.
Who custom makes them here in Sydney?
Do you have any details, web site..etc?
I can get EBC discs which look pretty good and they're of the slotted type.
I will check with them about the braided hoses too.

Brake upgrade is a must for an exy with so much power (especially if it's Auto)
EDIT: I have found THESE guys in Melbourne who manufacture the stainless steel braided brake line.

I have purchased numerous brake lines from Maltech and they do a quality job. I believe they are the only company in Australia that do ADR legal braided lines for certain cars.
Last car I fitted them to was a Toyota Soarer and the improvement in braking was astounding.
HIGHLY recommend!
