HUB Separating from Axle

Hi Guys,

An xtrailer has posted the following problem in the forum guestbook, so I have decided to move it here and create a thread for it because this is the first time I hear something like this happen to an exy and it may be worth noting just in case.

========

This is my first post ever, anywhere, so please be gentle with me. I have a 2002 TI Eksy with a recurring NASTY fault.
In August last year I started hearing a strange rubbing noise from front left wheel. I couldn't find any evidence that the tyre was rubbing anywhere and took it to the local (highly-reputable) Nissan dealer - FTG Nissan who could not identify any problem and suggested that it was probably brake pads rubbing which they had indicated needed replacing. I was unconvinced and after a few more weeks and the noise getting worse, I took it to a local mechanic. He found that the Hub had completely separated from the axle and the splines that hold the hub in place had ground away. $600 later, the hub and stub axle were replaced and everything was normal again. I had the car back at FTG Nissan 3 weeks ago for its 110,000 service which picked up nothing unusual (apart from fact that I still needed brake pads).
Today, I had the car in at the local brake specialist who replaced my pads and brought to my attention the fact that the front LH hub had AGAIN separated itself from the axle. They asked me to very carefully drive the vehicle home as they considered it dangerous. These guys had no knowledge of the previous fault. I am worried that I have a lemon as I cant find any other instance of this fault in this forum. Car has 115,000 kms on it and basically is just a local runabout. It has done no 4WD'ing. I bought it in 2005 with 85,000 kms on the clock. Has anyone else heard of this problem? I would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks - Craig

Re: HUB Separating from Axle

Hi Craig,

It is indeed a strange problem and I have never come across it in Australia or overseas.

Could it be related to rusting of some sort? but then again, why would a replaced HUB suffer from exactly the same problem a short while after it was replaced? emoticon

I'll do some searching about this and let you know if I find anything, but so far, you're the first case with this strange defect.

Hi Jalal,
Thanks for moving it for me. I just realised what I'd done and was about to recreate it.

Not only am I the first, I'm also the second since I've had the problem twice

Cheers - Esky

Esky, I don't suppose you took some pics of the offending bits did ya ?
Or maybe you still have the damaged parts.

Re: HUB Separating from Axle

Hi Lance,

No, unfortunately I didn't keep the parts or take photos. They did show me the hub and the bearings and both had very obvious signs of wear. It was clear that there had been metal rubbing on metal over an extended period of time. The inside of the hub wear it fits onto the axle had a severe taper and there was quite noticeable scoring of the surface.
I have just jacked the car up and can feel there is about 5-10mm of free play (wobble) in the wheel.
It is quite severe but it hasn't noticeably affected driveability. It can't be doing either the tyres or the pads any good either.
I will ensure that I keep the parts and take photos this time.

I am amazed that the 110,000km service didn't pick it up since wheel bearing and suspension checks are part of the service. I will be having a word with FTG Nissan tommorrow to find out their version. They did not find the fault the first time it happened either even when I had specifically told them there was a knocking/rubbing noise coming from front left wheel.

Hi Craig,

You say that you had the hub replaced around about August last year, is it not under a 1 year warranty? I would be taking back to that mechanic and getting him to investigate how this could have happened again.

Are you running with factory wheels?

Have you had a full alignment done either before or after the hub was replaced?

Could it be a bent drive shaft causing excess vibration? (Not sure if this could cause this kind of damage but worth a look)

Re: HUB Separating from Axle

Hi Adam,
Thanks for suggestions.
To answer your questions, factory alloys with standard Bridgestone Dueller AT 215/65/16's and No, I haven't had an alignment done.
I am due for new tyres all round and was going to have that done then. (more $$$ into the money pit).

Bent shaft is a thought but then I would have thought it would be felt through steering wheel (which was not the case).

And the question of warranty. Well, that is a good question. The invoice for the work does not specify the warranty on the work. I'd have thought 90 days would probably be about it. Could argue that they have a moral obligation. Thing that scares me is that they were expensive in the first place. I have had a number of issues come up concurrently and money is tight.
The brake specialist has quoted me $275 to supply and fit hub. The part alone from the original repairing mechanic was $320.
I really don't know the best way to tackle this.

Could argue that FTG Nissan should have picked up the problem (both times) or that the repairing mechanic has moral obligation to fix (at no or minimal charge) or just cut my losses, take it to brake specialist and pay the $275.

What I am most concerned about is that it could happen again. I don't drive it hard so I am perplexed as to what might have caused.
I haven't hit anything and no-one else drives it. It's all quite bizarre.

Cheers Craig

Could just be dumb luck Craig emoticon

Whatever way you decide to go, if it involves new works at additional cost, make sure you get confirmation of warranty should it happen all over again. Get them to put it in writing if necessary. This sort of damage shouldn't re-occur and the attending mechanic ought to evaluate the entire system before simply replacing a damaged part.

You essentially took the car to the mechanic in the first place with a problem, you asked them to fix it and they tried, but it hasn't worked, so what you've paid for wasn't the right solution. As you said, their moral obligation is to take it back and have another look under warranty of previous works.

Re: HUB Separating from Axle

Folks,

I have a solution to this perplexing problem.
I took the car back to the local mechanic who replaced hub and wheel bearing late last Sept No charge for the repeat call (phew!)

He found that the nut that screws onto the axle to hold the hub in place had backed off a couple of turns.

Here's the rub though -
Rather than have a tessalated spacer washer then a split-pin to secure, apparently Nissan just put the split-pin in place and loctite the nut. My mechanic called the local Nissan dealer to confirm that this was normal. Apparently it is.

Therefore if any impact (even a minor kerb bump) were to cause the loctite seal to break, the nut that secures the hub can fairly easily back itself off several turns and allow the hub & wheel bearing to be completely mashed (over time obviously).

Hey! At least there is a split pin to stop the wheel from completely falling off???
Does this arrangement sound dodgey to anyone else? Sounds pretty dodgey to me.

I hope this info helps someone else. The "brake specialist" had quoted me $275 to replace my "faulty" hub. I'm just pleased that the problem was nothing serious.

Cheers Craig

Thanks for this update Craig. It does sound very serious and very dodgy too!

Am surprised we didn't here more of these cases, especially in Australia where exy bashing off-road is very popular compared to other countries.
