So does anyone know the minimum safe thickness for the rotors?
Their thickness is 28mm when new and the minimum allowed is 26mm. Basically they can only be machined once! A raised lip is a good indication that they need machining if there is enough thickness left in them.

Re: New Front rotors?
depending on how good you are with tools, whip the wheels off and have a yourself, normal rule of thumb to replace pads is when the friction material is equal too or less than the thickness of the backing plate of the pad. you'll need a micrometer to measure the rotor properly.

Re: New Front rotors?
Had mine changed after 38000km. I was advised that it was 0.1mm to limit. Admittedly, the wife is rather heavy footed! Kmart auto quoted in excess of $500 to have the rotors changed, some local brake maker brand name . I then bought a full set of Nissan rotors and pads on my oversea trip for less than $200 and topped up $80 to have them changed. I thought I was conned until I found so many similar cases in this forum.

Re: New Front rotors?
Well, I just took the Exy to my mechanic (not the Nissan dealer) and asked for a 2nd opinion. They took the wheels of and I have been told that I should be ok until the next time the pads will need to be replaced.
So in about 40,000 Km which mean. The car will have 70,000 on the clock which is more reasonable for rotors to be replaced.
Now, I'm not sure why Nissan wanted me to do them now. As my warranty will expire next month I got the pads done with my mechanic and probably will keep coming back for future service. Pads were only $136 fitted so I'm pretty happy with that. I'm sure Nissan would have charged more.
Other thing that my mechanic found when taking the front right wheel was that the sway bar was disconnected. The thread had rust on it and he reckons it was off for awhile. How come Nissan didn't pick this up few weeks ago when they done my 30K service??
Thank for your reply anyway.
Cheers

Re: New Front rotors?
Hi Surfie 71
I have worked for a few car dealers (various makes) and there are a couple of reasons why they suggest changing parts that other independant mechanics will leave on your car. one is obviously revenue but the main reason is liability, when they look at items like brakes they take into account the wear already there and the time until your next scheduled service and if they determine that the brakes are ok now but will be worn out of spec prior to the next service interval they have a legal obligation to bring that to your attention, they then turn this into a sales oportunity and suggest you get it done now while you are at the dealers instead of saying you will need these changed in x amount of km's, when you would probably take the car elsewhere. Independant mechanics are not bound by this rule and can just look at the part on a given day and say its within spec even if its only got a tiny bit of life left in it.
